I bought this 1-gallon Heritage jar for a 5LB bag of flour and it fits perfectly! Not worried about the lack of a seal because it still sits flat on top of the container. But don't listen to Hocking's size chart or a lot of the reviewers out there! They will tell you that you need a 2-gallon jar for 5LB bags of flour and that just is NOT true! The 2-gallon holds 10 LB of flour! Because of the sturdiness of this jar, I am planning to get a 2-gal for 10LB sugar and 3/4-gal for whole coffee beans. BEGINNERS TIP: If you feel you must have a silicone seal for your jar, do an internet search; there are people selling them made specifically for the Hocking Heritage jars!
Glass doesn’t leach plastic into our bloodstream. Glass does not leave microplastic residue in your brain and organs.Keeps your hormones free from excessive estrogen. I make my own yogurt and there is a much cleaner taste than storing in plastic Most of the plastic containers break when you drop them. Why not go for glass and stop playing with your family’s health!
Very heavy glass and though it came with other loose items not at all boxed or wrapped in protective wrap and in aplastic bag, by the grace of God came with no breaks nor any cracks!!! MUST wrap glass items in protective wrap or box up seperately from any other items PLEASE!!!!
These DO NOT have a seal - but the description notes that. I love them!!! I have used many, many of them in my Laundry, Pantry %26 Kitchen. They are wide mouthed so that you can easily retrieve your stored item (flour, sugar, laundry soap, etc.). Wonderful, heavy quality!!! I just wish they sold seals for them!
Personally, I needed a bigger jar for my sourdough starter to live in because we kept overflowing our smaller jars. In a starter it’s important that it not seal airtight as it is a living micro-organism and must be able to breathe. The lid fits perfectly on top but there is no rubber between the glass that would stop airflow . . .
I purchased 4 jars without seeing them in person and I’m happy with my purchase. The glass is thick and the perfect size.. One should know that there is not a tight seal on the jars. It’s just a lid on a jar. So it would be good for things like sugar, flour, rice and etc. nothing that needs to stay closed to preserve freshness.
I needed something to store bulk purchases of trail mix and other snack items. I did not want a sealing jar or bowl, nor something decorative. This is for snack, after all. This is perfect for me to open one handed (thus no sealed lid to forcefully remove) and grab a snack. It is a shame that there were only two available, one at each store. I would love more.
Normally things like this have a silicone gasket. I really don't understand why this doesn't. It's just glass on glass. If you put the lid down too hard (and I don't even mean slam it down) you risk cracking it perhaps. It's a thick glass, so it won't break easily, but it's still glass rubbing against glass every time you put that lid down. This also means the seal isn't as good since there is no give at all, especially once you get bits of flour (or sugar or whatever else) on the rim. I tried to cut something to fit, but it's a chore even to get it to stay on. Possibly a rubber band or similar could work better, but most are too small and thin and there's no lip on the inside to hold anything in place, so it can slide off. It may be necessary to glue something in... It's good at all the rest of what it does. It's a nice thick glass and has a really wide mouth so you can definitely get measuring cups in there, but I'm not inclined to recommend it without at least a really basic gasket.
I usually like Anchor Hocking products—they’re generally well-made and reliable. But the lids on these jars are a letdown. They don't fit. The jar itself is great for storage or display, but the lid design really undermines the overall usefulness. If you’re using it for dry goods or decorative purposes, it might still work.
Do Not Buy for food! I bought this trash for homemade dog food. After using it for weeks I notice the rim is chipped. Where did the glass shards go??? Did I feed glass to my dog???? I am so angry and frightened for my dog! Anchor Hocking used to be a trusted name for sturdy glassware. No more. I will never trust this brand again for feeding myself and loved ones. This is very dangerous!!
