This particular seed cake the birds absolutely love out here in California. The only problem I have is...sometimes with the live worms, the cake doesn't get baked all the way and there's live worms wiggling around. It's absolutely disgusting. I had the cakes on my counter, and the worms got all over the place! They were climbing the walls and stuff-- it was totally disgusting! most of the time they are totally fine and there's no problems, but just beware!
My birds love it! Cardinals and House Wrens so far! Yes, there are larvae in the cakes that hatch after packaging. They will make their way out of the packaging. I wore a pair of disposable gloves when I opened the packaging. I picked up the live baby worms and placed them on top of the seed worm cake. No big deal! The birds enjoy them. My recommendation is to have a pair of gloves handy and also if you're not placing the cake immediately make sure you tie the bag up (no holes in bag), so the worms can't get out. They will be loose inside the bag. I will say the cake had a webbing from the larvae underneath it.
The bird seed treats are such a hit with the birds every year. The only problem is they run out of them at the stores. The treat attracts so many different types of birds. The treats are so easy to use because you just open the package and put the bird seed stack on the bird feeder and hang it outside.
Well, according to the volume of chirping outside and the speed in which the seed ring disappeared I would say it is a hit. Our feathered friends say: Thank you Thank you chirp chirp! Ha
All of my birds (Robins, Woodpeckers, Nuthatch, Cardinals, Wrens, Blue Jays, Mockingbirds, Thrush, Chicadees %26 Blue birds) love this! I can't keep the feeder filled up fast enough. And there is no waste. I'm really glad I tried this.
The birds just love the Audubon Park Mealworm Snack Stack Wild Bird Food that I bought them. I took down my bird feeder because a hawk was attacking the birds. When I saw this product, I purchased it to hang under the edge of my carport where they have some protection. Because it is compact the birds are just eating off from it and not off the ground. Much safer from the hawk, and they love it!
This is by far the best seed cake from Audobon Park. It attracts Goldfinch, Chickadee's of all types, Pygmy Nuthatch, and others. Works way better than the fruit and nut blend that most birds in the NW ignore. Also House Finches (Grey with red heads) don't seem to like this seed cake, so you won't be buying them every 5 days. House finches are a pests to me, and are aggressive little piggy's. The only downside of this cake is the squirrels really like them too!
Woodpeckers %26 chickadees seem to love these, however, I believe they would last a lot longer if they were out of the weather. It rained on the cake, rendering it a soggy mess. The gelatin that is holding the whole thing together melted off %26 caused the nuts %26 seeds to become a mushy glob . I will only put these out when there is no rain for several day.
Twice now, I have received this meal worm snack stack with bugs. The first time it had bugs, we had maggots crawling on our counter from the snack stack, and today when it was delivered, it had beetles and a brown dusting all over it. I've never had this issue with the other snack stacks, so I will definitely not be purchasing this particular one again.
There were a few birds that attempted to peck at it, and even the larger birds gave up. It looked really good in the pictures, but sorry I wasted my money
