[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I used this to seal my cherry slab I poured epoxy resin over after I sealed it with the polyurethane to prevent air bubbles during the curing process!
I don't write reviews but in this case I thought this may be beneficial for others. My project was 200 board feet of bookcase, six bookcases each with four shelves and side supports all made from sassafras planed and sanded down to 220 grit. The penetrating stain worked as stated on instructions on can and looked beautiful. I used provincial wiped off after 10 - 15 minutes with paper towels and applied gunstock as second color because customer liked the idea of a red/orange tint to the rich brown color of provincial. My challenge was the polyurethane application. I live in. Eastern PA and stained and poly starting beginning of December, outside temperature was variable from 30-50F days, 25-30F at night. Work area was detached three car garage so controlling temperature was the issue. The first application was perfect just as stated on can and met my expectation. The second application was not as expected. In order to speed up project I pinned front and back of each shelf so I can apply polyurethane to the front and back and sides of each shelf and set with bottom side down to dry on garage floor. The next day the back of all shelves looked great just as expected, but the top of all shelves which was faced up in the garage had uneven drying (satin and flat areas intermingle showing brush marks). Perplexed, the day of second application was misty rainy day and I thought it may be due to moisture made its way into garage. Upon review of how to cure moisture problems with polyurethane (difficult and risky) I decided it may have been due to cold temperatures the night after second application. I applied third application using new gallon can of polyurethane (in case first can had moisture contamination) and new 4" chinese bristle brush made for this type application. I also added kerosene heater and fan to boost heat and ventilation to enhance drying more along the lines of what stated as best case on can 77F, I was able to achieve 65F and 55 humidity. I am 9 hous into dry time and things are looking betterd -smooth surface even drying . The look is still flat but starting to turn satin. I hope this helps others. My challenge seems to be controlling all the variables to achieve the desired outcome.
I used this twice - once without stirring every 15 minutes and once stirring that often. It came out flat (satin) when I stirred as directed.
I have been using this product for several years. I make plaques with hardwood and after staining them with Minwax, I place several coats of poly on all surfaces. A 15" x 5.5" plaque does not take much poly but, I often times end up throwing away half a quart due to the product curing in the can. Makes for very expensive poly, yet Minwax has been unable or unwilling to provide a solution other than perhaps placing saran wrap on the surface of the unused poly. That was not a practical solution. Finally found a solution, add Argon gas to the top of the can, heavier than air so protects the product from the oxidation of air. CO2 did not work. Needed an inert gas that would lay on the surface of the poly protecting it. So yes it does a great job, just not always cost effective.
IT DOES NOT DRY SMOOTH, LEAVES BRUSH MARKS (RIDGES). IT DRIES TOO FAST AND IS ONLY GOOD FOR VERY SMALL AREAS!!!!!!!!!
Shame on Minwax for changing the quality of their product. I have bought many gallons of Minwax Polyurethane Clear Semi Gloss in the past. Today i went to buy another gallon and find out that you changed the label and name. Now it is called Warm Semi Gloss. I want the Clear Semi Gloss back. Why can't Manufacturers leave good products alone. You didn't improve your product... You just lost a loyal customer.
The one gallon version of the poly is a completely different varnish than the version the comes in a one quart can due to VOC requirements. The one quart version is great. The one gallon version does not flow, is very thick, takes longer to dry And does not penetrate - avoid it. The one quart version is not subject to the VOC rules, does not stink and performs well.
I give up. What does "Warm Satin" mean? I can't even find out if it's the same as regular "Satin". The store clerk tried it on a sample piece of wood. All I can say is it looked very odd. Since we had no regular "satin" the test was meaningless. I ordered a can of regular "satin" online.
Interesting website. You can write a review, actually more than one. You just can't read any of them. At one time was Minwax was literally the best manufacturer of commercial stains and finishes. Throw in a decade or two, a couple of acquisitions and stir and you a review list where 1/3 of the reviews are 1 star. It turns out after shaking, spraying and drying between 4 coats, the problem was no or very little polyurethane in the can. The can was just a can of polyurethane solvent.
I bought this a few days ago to cover a floor I had painted white. Though the polyurethane was a very light brown color, I applied it anyway. I assumed it would dry clear as the can said 'clear'. It did not. My floor looks terrible. It's a huge room. I don't know how to fix it, apart from sanding it and starting over again. While the coating seems durable, it looks like someone spilled weak coffee on the floor.
