Have had these collars on both my dogs after surgery. They do hold up well. My dogs just plow through whatever is in their way. Of course they will break if they bend enough. My female cracked hers in 5 or 6 places before she broke it.
I have been a veterinarian for 10 years, and am a veterinary ophthalmologist. I perform eye surgery with sutures that are so small that they can hardly be seen without the use of a microscope, and one rub of a paw can remove them and cause blindness. These are BY FAR the BEST E-collars you could possible use for your dogs and cats (I've even had my own dogs in these collars, as much as I hate E-collars myself, more than once). They are see-through, can be trimmed in multiple ways to custom fit your pet by your veterinarian, and do not cause sores on the neck. Every now and then, a large dog who is allowed to be very active while wearing an E-collar can crack the plastic by hitting it on a sharp corner -- this is true for most E-collars. My advice -- either use duct tape around the edge, or tape two collars together for strength. This is by far the best quality collar, and the easiest to clean and take off, if needed. Soft and inflatable E-collars are attractive to everyone, but often allow the patient to self-injure the area that the 'cone of shame' is meant to protect. Let an E-collar do its job, and use this one. (This is NOT a paid advertisement, and in all fairness, this is not a costly item for clients.)
Fostering a Catahoula right now that has broke 2 of these collars in a total of 5 days. She needs this to keep her from scratching her ear while she heals. One of them she tore a nine inch long 3 inch wide chunk out of. The other she split from the outer edge all the way to the neck. Luckily each time she broke one, we caught it quick enough before she could get to the point of scratching her ear and ripping off the mesh and sutures.
