I bought the 5" 3/16 stroke model when it first came out. I've got probably 200 hours into that unit and it still works wonderfully. I bought the 6" about 18 months after and while I have not used it nearly as much (the 5" is my go to) I have probably 20-30 hours on that machine and I have also had zero issue. I do not baby them, I use them with really good dust extraction doing only wood work/furniture making. I've had no issues at all that anyone is listing.
I'm writing this review while I am on hold for customer service. I've had this sander for 9 months now and have done nothing but sing it's praises. I have been beyond happy with it Last project, it started stalling during sanding. Just randomly with no excessive pressure applied or anything. Sanding some pine for a project yesterday and it just stopped. It will not come back on. I've used multiple outlets and even used my backup sander on the same outlet in the dust collector. The problem is the sander. After logging on here, I see this is common. I don't understand how this is not recalled
I love this sander. For this price point, it should have a removeable cord and it MUST have a box if you want 5 star ratings. Its great and very ergonomic on flat surfaces. It's a little clumsy on corners and edges.
You can see that some time ago I wrote a rave review of my 5" and 6" sanders. The 5" served me well for many years now and after taking a few week break from sanding I went to use the 5" this past weekend and it's dead. Tried multiple outlets and it simply just doesn't work anymore. The 6" is still working fine but the 5" was my go to for everything. Sad that now I'm going to pursue other brands, probably Mirka and spend almost double on a 5" sander but at least I know it will last or that they will stand behind it if it doesn't. 3M please rework this sander and put one out on the market that will not just randomly die on us.
The first time it iverheated was after about 2 hours of use. I sent it in to be repaired (it took about 3 weeks to get it back). The second time was after about 10 more hours of run time and 2 weeks after it was out of warranty. I have never used it without a dust extractor and always blow any dust out of the body of the sander after each use. Total piece of junk.
I liked it until the motor died with 3 weeks of use. When I bought this sander, I had seen a few reviews saying this but I thought the problem would have been fixed but it wasn't. This isn't a tool you can trust and it's not worth the time dealing with it, the frustration and disappointment. It's a product which has lots of potential but, as a professional woodworker, I expect my higher end tools to work flawlessly from the moment I pick them up to the moment I put them down over the course of years. This product is not that.
I've has this for 6 weeks and it stopped working last night. When it was working it was great. Very smooth and quite operations with great dust collection. Last night it just stopped working, flashed the lights 3 times. Unplugged it and tried again, same thing, flashed the lights 3 times and nothing. I went from very excited to very disappointed
Bought the sander in August of last year and have less than 30 hours on it and just like most of the reviews it suddenly started cutting in an out then went completely dead. This is way to expensive a sander for there to be this many customers with the same issue. 3M needs to get on the ball and fix the defect and have a special page to get get these sander repaired.
Bought a few months ago and not used much. Every time I've used it, it has overheated and shut down. This includes majority of the time with extraction and the odd occasion without extraction. Unit was sent back to supplier and replaced with brand-new one which has done the same thing on several occasions. I am returning products to supplier this week and moving on to a different brand entirely. Pretty unfortunate because my whole workshop is stocked to the hilt with 3M products. 💩
Stopped working little over 90 days. Sander never left the table I use to do my finishing work. It did work great for dust extraction and probably the best balanced low vibration orbital sander I have ever used. However for the price I would not except to have issues this early on.
