The Kary's original dark roux is the best Jar roux that I have ever used its not expensive. This roux makes the best gumbo that I have ever made from a jar and it is great. One jar of roux will make me 2 pots of gumbo. I have used the Kary's for years now and this is the only one that I will ever buy. I highly recommend this the Kary dark roux to anyone wanting to make a great gumbo or to make something else that uses roux.
The only thing is all the oil was spilled out of the jar on the wrapping so u need to wrap them and stand them up it had no oil in it when I used it cause it all spilled out very hard to get out of the jar
I was raised using my mother's homemade roux. I was also born in Ville Platte, Louisiana and lived in the area until after college. This roux is as good as my mother's.
I have used this product before for making my gumbo. It is delicious and easier than making my own brown roux when I want good food and not much time to make it. Perfect nutty flavor. Shipping was fast and not over packed.
Love gumbo but don't love standing over the stove for 30 plus minutes constantly stirring to achieve the right color. This solves it all. I used 1/3 of the jar to make a gallon of gumbo. I but the three pack and give jars to friends and they all like it also. Good product.
My wife's choice, but not one that I would suggest unless you have something with strong flavors to cover up the strong soy bean taste of this product. It is solid as a rock under a layer of oil and even left out at room temp this is a mess to get out of jar and into pan. It does thicken quickly if you put enough in, but getting past the oil taste is pretty tough.
I have gotten this product in the past, and it was always packaged nicely. This time, it was in a large box (twice as big as needed) and the packaging was very skimpy. There were two broken jars, and there was product all over the inside of the box, including the other jars labels. If these were plastic jars, I could see it being packed this way. But these are glass jars and should be treated accordingly. Something should be said to who ever packed these items.
Review is not for the roux. It is for the packaging when shipping. This roux is great. However, the GLASS jars were not wrapped at all inside the shipping box and they were broke. This is the 2nd time this has happened. Walmart won’t issue a refund unless I go to the store and return the broken jars. I’m not putting broken leaking jars in my vehicle. So I’ve just had to take the loss. I am not able to find roux locally so I have to order it when I need it. I guess I’ll have to try Amazon next time and see if they wrap it better for shipping. I’m including a picture of the delivery photo. You can see the bottom half of the box is soaked with grease from the spilled contents.
I sent this item to my daughter. She is in the military and stationed in Washington state. She misses home and Cajun cooking so I thought this would be a nice surprise for her. The item arrived broken, in an oily box and wrapped in newspaper. Several jars were cracked and one was smashed. See pics.
The product itself is fine, that's why I ordered it as I can't get it locally. What was unacceptable is the way it was picked and shipped by Walmart. The outer box was not crushed or damaged, however this and glass jars were just thrown into the box. See the picture of the box when opened. Beyond lazy and unacceptable packaging.
