I have had these for a while now and waiting to review them until after I saw how they performed. I installed them in an older computer and am still running Win 7 Pro on it. I am very happy with them so far. They will handle several external hard drives at the same time with no problems unlike the cards I replaced with these.
Very easy install. Plug it in then fire up the PC and run the driver disc. Speed is really an improvement over USB 2.0. This card comes with two ends for it. One that fits in a full size computer case and one for a small form factor case. Runs as it should. Would buy one again if I needed it.
This card works brilliantly for my Oculus Rift (VR). It supports windows 10, but make sure you don't install the old drivers from this website. The new ones are automatically installed by windows 10, and are (at the time of my writing) driverversion 10.0.16299.125, dated 07.12.2017. Make sure your motherboard has enough PCIe-lane bandwidth left for a for x4 card - as well as a x4 slot, of course. Some motherboards downgrade to x1-speed when other slots are taken. Doublecheck your motherboard manual! Also keep in mind to plug in power from your PSU, otherwise the card won't work as well.
I've been running this card well over a year and beside having to reinstall the drivers once (power failure) this card has been flawless. My machine only has USB 2.0 ports so the speed upgrade was quite dramatic, I don't think you quite get the full 5gbps as advertised but my external USB drives do outperform my internal SATA II hard drives.
Even a computer novice can install this card. Need a open PCI slot, Sata power supply and a CD rom player. Be sure to unplug the computer, take off any jewelry (or you may get zapped) Physically install the card per directions. Run the CD rom and plug your items in. Done
The price was right, and it is small enough to fit in with my rather large GTX 780Ti graphics card. The Pro Flight Sim instrument panels require USB 3.0 ports; all eight work perfectly with two 4 port StarTech PCIe cards.
I used this adapter to replace an external powered hub that was causing problem with my stsyem booting. This card fixed the problem and has worked great. Only downside is its not plug and play. Drivers have to be loaded from CD.
The only reason I gave it four stars is that the width of the punch outs, on my PC, are barely wide enough to plug in a USB cable. I had to reopen my PC to make a minor adjustment. This may not be a case for all Desktop PC'S. There's no doubt that it will fit all desktop PC'S, it's just that the width is cutting it close. But, like the header of the review, it works great!
For whatever reason doesn't like warm booting, prefers cold boots, at least under Linux. Otherwise works fine.
I have had good experiences with previously bought serial and parallel port expansion cards with low profile brackets from Startech. But on this card it is either the wrong dimensions on the bracket or something with the hole pattern on the card. When mounted, there is a 3-4mm gap left causing me to bend the mainboard when the latch holding the card is locked. Because of this I'm not comfortable using this card. I have tested with a random ethernet card also with a low profile bracket, and this fits just fine in the same computer without bending the mainboard noticeably.
