Try 3 by 3 before 4 by 4 for beginners.
The instructions are very descriptive with similarity to a 3 by 3 cube, in a way. I'd recommend a 3 by 3 cube first before the 4 by 4 for beginners because the 3 by 3 is easier than the 4 by 4 to solve.
