Good movie based on a true story got it real fast
This movie tells the story of Mine That Bird's incredible victory at the 2009 Kentucky Derby. More accurately, it tells the story of his owners and trainer and their decision to enter him in the race despite his very poor performances in all of his races as a three year old prior to the derby. Despite being a champion 2 year old, Bird had not won a race since being purchased by the New Mexico "cowboys". All of that changes when they receive a call from the racing commissioner at Churchill Downs advising them that Bird has qualified for the derby based on his winnings as a two year old. The decision is made to enter him in the race, despite his long odds, crooked front feet, small size, and no jockey committed to ride him. Fortunately for the cowboys, Calvin Borel, who road Street Sense to victory in the previous derby, steps in to fill that role. Calvin plays himself in the movie and adds such an amazing touch to the realism of the film. They use race footage from the actual race to complete the final scene. The fact that bird gets bumped out of the starting gate and falls 30 lengths behind the leaders at one point gives you the feeling of dread the owners went through. Even the announcer of the race makes the comment "...and last of them all is Mr. Hot Stuff. So around the track they come... well behind the rest of the pack is Mine That Bird. " Like everyone else, he seems to dismiss Bird from the race. In fact, Bird takes almost a 4 length lead before the announcer even realizes that he is there. If you compare this movie to the big horse movies like Secretariat or Seabiscuit then you will be disappointed. This is not a big budget movie. That being said, it is an honest look at a group of owners who, by appearance have no business racing horses, and their decision to back a horse that everyone else had given up on. It is an amazing story that shows that the rewards for never giving up are worth it. A 50 to 1 longshot winning the most prestigious race.
I train horses and the movie is like the real struggles some trainers go through with bad luck and owners. You feel the love he has for the horse and the once in a lifetime change he received.
Good movies
Love it especially being a true story
has about 10 minutes of is previews and is hard to navigate to the main menu. I guess that depends on the player you are using. I have Cyberlink on my HP, and had search and come up with the "root menu." The condition on arrival was OK. I ordered 2 copies, one for a friend who owns horses. One had a bit of "bend" in the DVD cover. But, it did play fine. As for the movie itself....I went to visit Mine that Bird a few weeks ago up in Roswell...he is doing fine! Yes, he loves mints and enjoyed them when I offered! The movie is so much fun and the fact that Calvin Borel, the real jockey and some of the actual race footage is used makes the movie much more believable than something that is "made up." The bonus material makes it clear that the producers/director were very careful in choosing locations and actually managed to get Churchill Downs let them film some of the race scenes there...highly unusual! MTB appears in the film (look quick!) but not in the action sequences, by the way. This is a feel good movie and I enjoy re-watching some of the sections that you can start from on the DVD. It really is a romp!!
A surprisingly entertaining movie based on a true story about an out of nowhere chance to run in the Kentucky Derby.
The movie is good. It took Walmart 2 and a half weeks to get it to me, lost the package 2 times. Had to stay on Walmart to get my movies.
