It is wonderful that Great Value offers such a great variety of dried bean and pea products. They are very nutritious. The instructions on the package are easily understood and make preparation easy. I like to make a pound bag and use it throughout the week in salads, to make dips, burgers, as a main course. They are really versatile. They are shelf stable and they can even be planted in the garden.
I bought the black-eyed peas so I'd be ready to make Hoppin' John for New Years. Great Value dried beans and peas are good quality and are a staple in my pantry. The black-eyed peas are great in the Crock-Pot along with some ham and plenty of spices. Dried beans are also more economical than canned beans and are easy to prepare as long as you can budget the long cooking time (or use an Instant Pot!).
I have purchased the great value black eye peas several times already, and they come out so good. I normally soak them for several hours before i cook them and i find this makes them taste so much better. I like to throw some sausage or even some tasso in my black eye peas. I cook mine in pot on j U y
I love these black-eyed peas. The fact that they're shelf-stable is a huge plus for me, being able to keep them on hand without taking up freezer space makes life so much easier. I soaked them overnight, then cooked them low and slow with bacon, onion, and a little pepper, and the flavor absolutely bloomed. Rich, hearty, and deeply satisfying. Affordable, versatile, and perfect for real home cooking. This is definitely a repeat buy in my house.
These are a great buy. I have been using them for years. The one pound bag and the price works for me. Soak them for a few hours and rinse before cooking. No hard boiling--medium low heat, just as the water starts to boil. That's the sweet spot. Gently stir and add water as needed while cooking. Pro Tip: Use a larger pot Take your time. Nurse the peas to tenderness. When they reach your desired texture, turn heat to low and add 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda. Now you will see why the larger pot was recommended. Foam will rise up! Gently stir until it calms down. Keep heat set at low or off during this step. Baking soda neutralizes acid and creates the "magic sauce"... not so watery later. Allow to simmer on low heat. Add other ingredients: bell peppers, onions, celery... Adjust water level as needed. Precook meats separately: chicken, ham, etc.. avoids overcooking. Add last with your seasonings while simmering. *Serves well with cornbread, rice, veggies ...and good friends!
No stones or debris found in the lb bag. Easy to follow instructions included. They looked just like the frozen ones after soaking overnight. Very clean, almost all the peas were whole, uniformly sized and easy to cook. Walmart carries in store. Great value and good protein source. It's a pantry staple.
Southern me grew up eating lots of black eyed peas. Pair with some fried potatoes and fluffy sweet cornbread. There's a meal. Legumes are great for vegetarians and vegans for the protein. I occasionally throw in a ham bone 🍖
I spent over 10 minutes sorting these peas, and the result is as you see below. Have never, ever gotten any pea/bean product with this much waste. It's full of debris and broken moldy peas. Will not be buying WM Great Value black-eyed peas again. Don't waste your money. If I didn't live 40 miles from WM, I'd be returning this.
One thing I didn't get them in my order I'll let you all know and you didn't do anything about it so no I will not recommend you all for anybody anymore this will be my last order with you
