Boy oh boy where to start, my local Walmart had these on at a great price so I bought the 40, 30 and two 10s the 10 size has 6lbs of drag perfect for crappie fishing it also holds a plethora of 12lbs line. Solid audible click on drag, the drags nice and smooth. The 30 and 40 have plenty of drag for bass fishing and stripper fishing for the 10 size Id stick to crappie or pan fish maybe a very light weight drops hot rig for smallies. I ope they never discontinue the silver max line you can afford to replace them every year if needed too I usually get 2 to 3 years out of them
This reel is very smooth and a bargain. I purchased it to match my Silver Max baitcasting outfit and they make a perfect pair. The 6 bearings make it very smooth and the fast retrieve is great. I put it on a 7 ft medium heavy rod and it is great for larger bass and it casts very very good.

(Short versions) these reels are awesome! So there i was fishing with my son in our 17' tin crappie rig. We marked some brush piles on side imaging, threw our buoy markees out. Confirmed with down imaging the crappie were fat and rip for picking. Broke out the abu garcia silver max 30's and 40's. Dropped a jig down and thumped em on their nose to do the dance. When it happen...that THUMP that was Mistakable for what we call... the golden crispies. Good ole crappie. The 12 lbs hiviz green fluorocarbon starred to dance left then right. I raised the rod up high to the sky snd the drag (set about 40%) started to peel off soft and even like a thread pulling from your favorite sweater vest. The audible clicks were heard for hundreds of acres across the water. As if i was the only real fisherman on the water right then in that moment and wveryone else was spectating. Thats when i did it.... i reached over with my left (weak) hand and turned the drag up to 57% (wow thia guys crazy(i know right) ). The crappie by tjia time had his second wind from showing out under the boat. I cranked the ros tip down to the water and lifted the rod to the sky again. Counting in my head how many feet i had reeled in and he had pulled out as to remember the depth he bit st ao i could make wiick work of getting back down there when i had rangles this bohemoth into the livewell. As i bosted this 17” slab over the port side of the tin rig the jig poppes out and feel back i to the water. I shut the lid to the livewelll and i heses the drag... click...click click click...ziiiippppppp. I jolted to the bow where the silvermax was about to go bail forst into thr drink. Lifting that rod high to the skys again i knew...this wasnt no googan loment this was steaight up prime time...another thick back slab was anout to test my upper body strength (which is superior) and my csrbon drag washers of the sulver max. BOTH bestes this crappie in short order as the drag was still set to 57% so he went for negative yards on this run. NOW thet i have your attention heres the meat and tatera friens. This reel with last you 2 uears fiahing 200 days a year. Now your catch to land ratio will be factored in on that statement but i mean it might jot be Lake fork giy approved or be seen on the flw tour but dor us regulsr joes who stoxk the freezer day in and day out it works, easy in your pocket and looks good! Thats half the battle (gi joe). Rockie out!
First off I don't understand why anyone would give this reel a bad review. My wife was shopping at Wal-Mart and took a pic of this reel with her cell phone. She showed me the picture and I told her to go get the size 40 silver max reel. When she brought it home I was so impressed with the quality and how well built it was I sent her back to get a second one. I have two 7 foot medium heavy rods that I needed good reels for to fish large northern pike with. The size 40 is just the ticket for the rod. The silver max 40 is a very well built reel. Nothing cheap about it at all. Ive seen higher priced reels that are not as good. The bail wire and bail spring is very well made. This reel is very smooth with the 6 bearings. I spooled both of the reels with 30 pound Spider wire braid. The silver max reel lays the braid nicely on the spool with no twists. The drag works well handling a large pike. I live on the Mississippi river so we have some big northern pike here. This reel looks as good as its construction. I say its a fantastic reel. Go get yourself one of these reels. Like I said before I just cant figure out why anyone would give this reel a bad review. Im a happy customer.
