It's a 21 step process to dye fabric successfully. If you don't add vinegar or salt or in some cases, both, it can be rather troublesome. Need 1 tablespoon of laundry detergent. Hot water at ALL times. 140 degrees bare minimum for water temperature. 1 gallon of water per 1 yard of fabric. Keep hot and stirring for one hour. Dark or Bright colors require double dose of dye.
This dye clearly states that it is made for protein fibres--wool, silk, feathers, rayon etc. It will not work on cotton!!! Get the type made for natural fibres for cotton dying. Also, pay attention to how much each pkg will dye--many like Dylon or iDye are for about 1 mens shirt or 2 smaller blouses...
"Jacquard Acid Dye" is an "acid dye" which is only for wool, silk, cashmere, etc., but not cotton, and rayon. Thankfully the only acid you have to add is vinegar. If you want to dye cotton, or rayon fabrics you must buy the "Jacquard Reactive Dye," and have to add a few tablespoons of "Soda Ash" to the dye to "fix" the dye, otherwise the Reactive Dye will not adhere to the cotton fibers. Careful with the Soda Ash...I understand it can irritate the lungs and skin. You do not add vinegar when using the Jacquard Reactive Dyes. The colors come out lovely when following the instructions. I think Jacquard even makes a dye just for polyester and synthetics.
I've been a spinner and weaver for over 30 years. This has been my 'go to' dye for animal fibers (wool, mohair, alpaca, silk, etc.) for many years. The colors are rich, saturated and color fast when properly mordanted and set.... it is NOT for cotton, acrylic, or rayon, But it is an excellent dye for animal protein fibers! It is unfair to gIve this product a bad review because you didn't follow directions tried to use it used it for something it was never intended to be used for. This is an acid dye, not designed for plant fibers and will not give satisfactory results on them. Try Rit or Procion instead. .
I bought this dye to use on two small throw rugs, I even used two dyes and it hardly colored them. The rugs were gray to begin with but they were starting to fade so I thought I'd spruce them up but the dye did not even do any coloring. What a big disapointment and loss of money.
I definitely agree with the first reviewer: the product DOES NOT WORK. I bought it to dye one brand-new white cotton t-shirt. I used my washer and followed all the directions. When I took the shirt out, it was still white, with only a smear of color on the front. A waste of money plus, it ruined the shirt.
