AcuRite Portable Lightning Detector (02020CA1)

Just had the opportunity to check the lightning detector in an office environment, as a thunderstorm rolled through. As long as the unit was near a window, it quickly registered strikes. I had to restart it a few times as it surpassed the 199 strikes level that the display has for an upper limit. Will see how it performs in a home setting next. So far, it's doing its job!

i spend time out in the open and som times i get distracted just enjoying my self the unit lets me know of lightning and electrical stormes near me so i can take apropiate action

Works dependably exactly as expected. Never disappointed with their products.

I like it a lot the color display and the mini speaker on the device and the beep you can switch it off for 60 minutes or turn it back on the only thing i do not like is the interference when i am trying to use the device indoors i have WI-FI in my House and a laptop Computer i relocate the device from the computer and tv. I would like to know will you guys make a mini carying case for the device to protect it from rain if you get caught out in the rain to protect it sense it is not waterproof.

Took this with me to a local fair that had predicted showers in the area but there was no lighting in the area. I will carry this with me when ever we are out and the weather is prdeicted to have storms looming. Will be a great tool to have when doing HAM radio in the field.

The only check I have is the local weather forecast and observations, but this thing appears to be dead on.

I don't know that I needed a lighting detector, but it is interesting to log the strikes around our home. Seems pretty accurate based on seeing lightning and hearing thunder. We will take it when we go hiking on days with storms in the forecast.

I have not really used this outside at this point.

States it has a 85 decibel alert, find that hard to believe unless you are right next to it you cannot here it as it is very soft beep. If you are hard of hearing or any noise around you outside you would never know it went off. I have had other AcuRite products that work great. Was very disappointed as i am outside a lot and was depending on something to alert me of approaching lightning as i have come very close to being struck before. Especially living in Florida need something with a louder alert than just a little beep. Thought it would have had an alarm or something louder sure cant hear it. Seems to detect very good just needs louder alert.

This is a piece of junk. My ears can detect lightning better than this thing. I was outside for an hour with this device on. It said it was "LISTENING", the count was 0, and the distance was blank. Meanwhile, my phone said the lightning was 5 miles away, I could smell a thunderstorm, and I could hear thunder. Finally I gave up and went inside.
