These were what I needed. Well made. (Only after I ordered them did I find the pair that went missing, so I did return these but wouldn't hesitate to get them again.)
I likely just have a less than wide aisle than most, but these, even shortened all the way, was very long.. I had to knot them to make them work. Otherwise they so far are sturdy, and the quality is great for the price.
I'm at a boarding barn that has plenty of tie rings but no cross ties. Most of the time, this is fine but on occasion there are things I'd prefer to cross tie my horse for. I didn't want to spend a fortune on cross ties since they are only used occasionally and was excited to see this pair at a very affordable price. They are certainly light and I can agree that the hardware isn't heavy as stated in other reviews, but they serve their purpose. If it were my barn, I would have shelled out a bit more to get a higher quality product, but for me and my purposes these do just fine.
The cross ties were easy to use and light weight, however, the hardware was not robust. The snap broke today. Unfortunately, replacing the snap is not a simple matter. It is very unfortunate to need to replace a cross tie that has not seen much use.
Fortunately, neither of my horses pull so I doubt I'll have much of a problem, but I'm sure these won't last long either. The end snaps are definitely cheap and it won't take much from any horse to snap them in half and break them right off. They'll do for now.
I should have paid more attention to the negative reviews. The webbing is what one would find on a cheap dog leash, and the hardware is lighter weight than what one would find on a good lead rope. They are long enough for my barn aisle, but I don't expect them to hold up. I bought two and will send one set back as my gelding had to chew on one set. My first thought when I opened these was, "Oh, cheap China cr*p. Smartpak is better than this."
I bought these cross ties years ago (2020ish) and they lasted beautifully until about 15 months ago. I bought all new pairs for three cross ties in my barn. As a safe practice I always connect any tie with hay string in my barn. I also do not allow tying without a breakaway halter. So when a horse pulls back in a situation the hay string usually snaps first, but if it doesn't the halter will go. Both have happened in the past from various issues. Yeah. Not with these new ones. Every. Single. Piece. Of Harware. Snapped. The clips. The panic snaps. The insides of the metal pieces seem to be some very fragile component. I would be fine if it was a one off from my 18.2hh hunter but the weanling shouldn't be able to snap a piece of metal when he slipped and fell. It's also not connections or the small pieces, it's the thick body of the metal components. SmartPak quality is usually unmatched but DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY! Only purchase these for a horse who's never, ever, pulled back for a backyard farm. Otherwise you'll be replacing them. Quite a lot.
Purchased 3 sets of these in January, put into service in February. It is now mid-April and I have one cross tie that has not broken. Each time it was a different horse that broke them, so I know it was not necessarily a problem horse, but problem snaps. Not once did the quick release “release”. Lost the last full set today. Unfortunately, can not recommend these cross ties.
They broke on the first use. My horse doesn't even pull back. He reached down to eat some grain that had fallen on the floor. Not only did they break, the broke in the wrong spot. The quick release didn't work and the snap itself broke off. Very disappointed about this.
We purchased these to replace our old ones but the very first horse we put in the crossties, backed up and the snap did not give so it broke. Then we still left the one up and it hasn't been used much but it does not stay shortened anymore. Im not sure if we just got a bad set or what but I would not buy again.
