Excellent in all situations, ambient and room, direct in front of pretty much any source. I use my two sets of matched pairs mostly on toms..smooth and accurate..my go to tom mics

Review of AKG C414 XLII Microphone
The microphone sounds absolutely delicious. It surpassed my expectations. I sound so very good on it as not in real life. LOL. My voice is bassy and it did not enhance it although it mellowed it out. The high end was also spectacular -- sharp but not harsh. I use it for voice-overs and radio commercials. Buy one if you can afford it! ~Bill

Worst experience
Disappointing Build Quality Unsatisfied: Not Worth the Investment Rating: 2/5 "I was excited to try the AKG Gold XLII, but unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. The build quality feels cheap and flimsy, especially the grille. For a microphone at this price point, I expected more durability. Even service centre also not good for akg .im worrying.
