Just got this & got it set up. Prob MPT shipping, arrived in a big ole box the kids love to play in, really easy to set up. Time will tell how well this barrel works. I do plan to drill holes in the depression near the screen on top to make it a useful planter that won't get water logged.
This turned out to be a great barrel. It looks great on our deck and holds plenty of rainwater. I combined it with the EarthMinded DIY Rain Barrel Diverter kit for a 3x4in Downspout. Once the barrel is full the rainwater continues down the downspout and will not over fill the barrel. We even dressed it up with a fern.
Very nice size, received item very quickly. The color was a bit of a colder gray than I expected but still works with the color of my house. It was nice having regular updates about where the item was in the shipping process.
This rain barrel is made of a pretty heavy duty plastic material, so it should hold up to normal use. I do have a complaint. The position of the water spigot is located about 18 inches up the side of the barrel. This means that when you siphon off the water, you can never really empty the barrel (unless you tip it over and pour out the water below the spigot). The spigot should be installed lower to ground level for more complete emptying. Also, the top of the barrel has a ""planter"" area, but it is only about 3 inches deep. I'm not sure what you can plant in so shallow an area. No rain since I received the barrel, so I haven't use tested it yet.
Unfortunately, while the Athena rain barrel is attractive and large, it was poorly packed and arrived dented in fully on one side. In addition, the spigot did not fit and the overflow valve was placed in back, against the wall, making it very hard to reach. I had a professional installing it and he has had trouble getting it to work.
I bought three similar 50 gallon rain barrels from Algreen last year. One broke during a wind storm the first month. I asked for replacement and they said no. The other two are very nice but it is hard to empty them. The spigot needs to be at the very bottom so you can drain. We gets loads of mosquitos now and never did before.
This barrel looks very nice in my landscape and I like the 2 valves. I put a hose on the back one so I can fill water cans quickly. But after just one season I have pin hole leaks in the back even after storing indoors for the winter !! I'm currently patching it up in hopes the holes don't continue to pop up but I'm leary that this will last very long
Rain barrel looks great but the outlet at bottom broke off when we moved it. The outlet is glued on. Have reattached and hope it'll stay one. The outlet on picture is brass but the outlet at bottom not shown is black plastic.
WARNING! Shipment ALWAYS arrives with brass spigot and caps MISSING!! Whether you order online from this store or others, the company DOES NOT SEND ANY INCLUDED PARTS, just the plastic barrel! Good luck calling them up to send you the missing spigot which they do not mail!!!
This is an update from my original review .... The thing leaks like a sieve !!!! I've tried patching it from the outside as well as opening up the top and patching from the inside ... It'll be in the trash next week after just one season
