I bought these as a "recovery" shoe after a stress fracture in training. Slightly stiffer, and more cushion has been great. My everyday shoe and also up to 7-8 mile shoe as I start to reup distance.
Very comfortable. Great grip. Good for long runs. I do wish they'd make them in all black.
I've been running in Altra's since their first shoes, but I left them for another brand when they became too narrow in the toe box. Then they came out with this shoe. I think 4mm drop is better for my running, the cushion is amazing, and the fit of the upper is fantastic. It is snug on your heel (another first for Altra). The only thing I'd change is that long feel-thing. It gives you blisters on your leg, but you can fix that by standing on it or clamping back with a woodworking clamp overnight. Anyway, I really hope you don't alter this shoe too much and that you keep it around. It's by far the best shoe I've ever run in.
I love the fit of the original wide toe box. Let me just say Im a former athlete and was Navy Special Operations. Im very outdoorsy but i have chronic athritis and foot injuries and have had 3 surgeries on my feet in the last year and a half. Walking and running and even standing arent the same. I am a supinator so i require a neutral shoe. Shoes are a big deal to me now, whereas before I was happy with my Brooks. I found Altra and love the fit and feel but they werent quite there. 0mm drop sounds good, but I need aome lift. These do everything I want. FINALLY!! I love the Olympus 5s but the zero drop for lomg periods becomes uncomfortable. I wanted a wide toe box, lift - which these are 4mm which seems ok (i could go a lil more for sure), a wide shoe so my pinky toe metatarsal doesnt rip out, some above average cushion, and a hiker/trail runner. This is it. Got the black ones. They look awesome and put them on and was like this is it. Im ordering another pair. Give us a waterproof version Altra! Id wear these all day to walk around in and run in. Make an Olympus with a lil lift too. Im all over it. Id love to have a carbon version too. Last but not least...dude Altra needs to make a sandal and flip flop. Id kill for that. Imagine the olympus or lone peak style sole in a hiking sandal, wide toe box, and some actual arch. It will rule the whole market. Some of their products could use some bore durabality but its not a deal breaker. Love that theyre doing some Lift now and in wides in trails shoes. Score. Highly recommended
I've put about 100 miles on these shoes, The drop is something to get used to for sure, especially with an Altra shoe. The soles have held up which is great. The tongue is absolutely plush which I know is not ideal for some, but it has worked well for me in terms of hugging my foot and ankle on the rougher part of the trails. With that being said, there are a few things that can be improved. I have wide feet but, but natural foot shape Altra is known for has seemed to get narrowed over the years. My older LPs and Timps had addressed the width where most people get hot spots (the distal portions of the 1st and 5th metatarsals, where it meets the proximal phalanges) but the Altra EWs its narrowed. I can see the material wearing down at this spot in the near future. The top of the toes also need to be reinforced a bit more as the serrated reinforced design won't hold up after a few more intense trail runs. Aside from that, would I recommend it, yes, but be aware, you'll have to get used to the 4mm drop. Oh lastly, the black is more of a midnight black/blue, just FYI. Nice work Altra.
Decided I needed to get a new pair of trail shoes before an upcoming race, and my timing was very good--my foot went through the side of my Olympus 5s after 500 miles or so the day before these arrived. A caveat before I give my impressions: I've put less than a hundred miles on these, and while they have held up well, durability issues seem to crop up with Altras randomly, so your mileage may (literally) vary. First, the good: the cushion on these, while slightly lower than the Olympus, still feels pretty plush. The rocker shape didn't really do anything for me, but it didn't feel any worse than my Olympuses. I was a little concerned about the mild drop--4 mm--because I'd been running in no-drop shoes for years, but this was barely noticeable. The meh: the loop at the heel doesn't rub against the back of my heel, but like the Olympus it "leans back" far enough that you'll probably want to run with gaiters to keep debris out of your shoes. The shoes are also a bit less breathable than my previous Timps and Olympuses--running on a really hot, muggy day I felt like my feet were swimming in sweat after a couple of hours. My next race is a 7-hour backyard-style ultra at the end of July in Virginia, and I have some concerns about what my feet will look like when it's over. Conclusion: assuming you don't have durability issues (remember my warning about those), this shoe is a solid addition to the Altra trail lineup. The rocker shape and slight heel-toe drop aren't particularly noticeable on trails, but that's not a bad thing, as they are well-cushioned but responsive like Timps or Olympuses.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Loved the wide toe box in the beginning. Shoe is not overly back weighted with not that huge chunk of foam under heel. Perfect amount of cushion with not a lot of weight. After a couple weeks my left foot toe box is perfect but my right toe box started rubbing my right toes causing pain and minor blisters. I have to wrap my right toes with an extra sock and a few cotton balls. Overall would give an 9.5 if it wasn't for the right toe box would give 10.
Loved everything about these shoes out of the box. Exactly what I was looking for. Fit, cushion, feel, perfect. However after about 25 miles in them, the seam inside of the shoe that runs next to the pinky toe has started to separate, Causing terrible rubbing. I had a monster blister on the outside of my pinky toe after a 5 mile run. Emailed Altra about the problem, and filed a claim a week ago. Haven't heard a word from them. Seems like customer service sucks, it's to bad.
I was intending to use my new Experience Wild Altras on the Portuguese Camino in September but after a few long walks in them I developed a hotspot on my right heel and my left little toe. My heel also slips up a lot no matter how I adjust my laces. I will not be taking them with me for the trip but can use them for occasional daily use at work. Disappointed!
Trail running/hiking less than 50 miles, the toe rubber is starting to come off already. These are super comfy and fit great, just not durable, which seems to be a common issue with altras.
