If you are into weather or just like to see what's going on at a glance, this fits the bill. Its not the easiest to install and I will admit I did mess up one part of it....but all and all its not too bad to set up. The display is in my opinion a little difficult. It seems like it would have been high tech in 1993, but once you figure it out, it works really well. Get it on a sale and you will be very happy, get it at the regular price, and you will just be happy.
I bought this to replace an aging unit. I reviewed quite a few home weather stations before deciding on this, primarily because of it relatively high price. There were several weather stations that were significantly lower cost with similar features, but most of them (like the Tempest, WS-4000, Wittboy) had the haptic rain gauge which lacks the accuracy I need. The setup was easy. Each sensor automatically connected to the console shortly after power up. The unit connected itself to Ambient Weather's network as soon as I connected it to my wifi. As far as accuracy, the wind sensor is much better than previous weather stations I've owned that had the traditional anemometer with the cups. It will detect a slight breeze before I notice the leaves on trees moving. The temp and humidity seem to be on part with other electronic thermometers I have. Still working with the rain gauge. Its better than my previous weather stations, but is slightly lower than my professional manual rain gauge but I think this is due to placement.
I have purchased 2 different weather stations both have failed me, I guess it didn't help I was cheap with those. It's updates incredibly fast the previous ones would update every 45-60 seconds. This one is almost real time. Graphs it maintains are excellent for going back to last week's information. 10 out of 10. The indoor temp is actually in my garage.
When I ordered this station I went online and checked out the set up manual, being my first weather station it looked complicated. But when I received it and started the process after mounting the sensors it was surprisingly easy. I am now on Ambient Weather and Weather Underground web sites. Don't be afraid it really is easier than you think to set this up. The only thing I would change on this unit would be make the outside humidity on the display larger, that aside this is a great station that displays a ton of information on a very good display screen.
Love the accuracy and weather reporting of this unit and the ability to add additional sensors for a fair price. Also appreciate that it allows for setting alerts and notifications for monitoring, and networking with Weather Underground and Ambient Weather while also being able to opt out of making the info public. Screen/console could be improved... It's readable and displays all the info, but set-up is tiresome via the screen itself and lacks customization of the screen display. Overall, happy with my choice.
Very easy installation and set up however one could have issues linking you're weather station to weather underground, ambient weather or any other online platform if they haven't owned an ambient station in the past. Considering an optional SD card that is not only used for storage of historical weather data but also for firmware upgrades I think it should come included with the system. Overall though, I am very happy with the ambient weather 5000 model. A much needed upgrade from my old 2902 model.
Beautiful display, but smaller than the older models making it a little difficult to read the finer details at more than five feet away. There are no moving parts other than the tilt and dump mechanism for the rain gauge. Low maintenance and uses either lithium or normal batteries for outdoor use.
We like the ability to have the rain collector different from the main unit. The console is easy to see what is happening.
Installation is very easy when replacing a previous station. Wind update speed is much faster . Other programming can be a bit of a pain.
Multiple functions don't operate and customer service won't contact us back after numerous calls.
