My love own this movie on vhs and now he has it on dvd.

This is mainly about one major battle during World War II. If you enjoy that time period, this will be worth your time and money. This is a true story. Excellent actors.

It was a bit disappointing as I expected more authenticity given the closeness to the end of WW2

Although the film entitled Anzio (OPERATION SHINGLE) for the most part, was historically accurate, I felt that the Director's main emphasis was placed upon the futility of War rather than the strategic and tactical aspects of the military operation itself. I also did not feel that it was of Robert Mitchum's better personal performances when compared to those of The Longest Day and The Enemy Below. I noted that many of the military vehciles and tanks were not of correct model and vintage and I felt the battle scenes lacked realism. However, the film did portray the campaign's failure accurally as Major General Lucas failed to take advantage that the landing caught defending General Forces completly by surprise. And his indecision to advance in force resulted in the loss of thousands of American GI's. The film left me with the impression that it was an attempt to leave the viewing audience with food for thought and a message similar to that of All Quiet on The Western Front.

If you're a war movie fan this is a misfire. The plot using a war correspondent as combat leader is implausible. American post WW 2 tanks doubling as German tanks without trying to make them look German. Battlefield tactics laughable. This is not your Band of Brothers quality.
