It's not a fill size arcade with a coin slot. But its just like the old arcade game. People complain about the spinner not being heavy, but it dont bother me. It's a great game machine for 169.00 dollars. I had a few scratches on the side, but I'm not crying about it. These things are shipped and there might be a few dings on it. Great machine and if you like the games then it's worth it! There is a YouTube video on how to make the spinner heavy.
This thing made me giggle when I first saw it. Not because it looks funny; the cabinet is an art piece in its own right, covered with the art and iconography of essential video game history. It wasn't the screen that made me giggle; the large LCD screen is an easy-on-the-eyes upgrade from the grainy CRTs of yesteryear. It wasn't the build that made me laugh; the cabinet is an ideal size for any home arcade, and how the manufacturers fit this large of a screen on such a good sized unit and still kept it relatively light, I'm not sure. What made me laugh with pure nostalgic joy was the inclusion of the original control scheme on the unit, complete with the classic twist dial! That is something you just don't find anywhere else for these four games (or any games, for that matter). The unconventional control scheme is how these games are meant to be played, and thanks to the manufacturer for putting out a cabinet that induce such giddiness and nostalgia. This isn't only an arcade cabinet; it's a time machine. I am writing this review as part of a contest.
Asteroids was one of my favorite arcade games growing up, and Arcade1Up does not disappoint with their version. This gaming cabinet is only 4 ft tall making it about 3/4 the size of your average arcade machine, but that in no way takes away from the quality and fun of this unit. Arcade1Up also sells a riser if you want to be able to play the game standing. I appreciate the retro look and feel of this cabinet as well as the easily accessible power and volume controls. Other perks, price, 17" monitor, classic graphics. This game is bound to provide hours of fun! I am writing this review as part of a contest.
I think everyone should own an Asteroid Arcade! I played and mastered Asteroids as a young teen. It brought me many years of pure fun. This arcade has the exact look and feel of the original including the button layout down to the original markings and color. The display is the same and the sound it perfect.
PRO's - Awesome little replica arcade. The games play well. Buttons feel good. Sound is great. Monitor is clear. Artwork looks great. Games are true to original. Fun and challenging. CON's - The spinner has a lot left to be desired. Yes, it works. Yes the games play well with it and I have had no troubles. But, it's not weighted and you can feel the cheap plastic. Will not last if abused, but I'm a game collector and take care of my stuff. So it has worked fine for me. Original Lunar Lander had a Throttle control similar to an airplane. This does not. So using the Buttons to control thrust may be challenging to some more than others. I, myself, have adapted to it well enough. Overall - Its a great system for those who love these games. A purist arcade fan may find them horid. They are small enough for kids to play. Big enough for adults to use sitting. If you prefer to stand just get the riser which makes it the size of a Cabaret Cabinet. For the price. These are well worth the money.
Tried this out as there was a working model at my local store. It's pretty neat and a heck of a deal. Only caveat is that the TEMPEST spinner is not like the arcade. The one in the cabinet doesn't have the mass nor the lack-of-friction of the arcade one. Otherwise, awesome. The games play just like the originals. The other machines in the series do not suffer from this one caveat. They are smaller and lighter than the original - but this makes them easier to transport. No quarters lol - although I'm sure if this takes off that someone will sell one on ebay.
got this for Christmas and was disappointed to discover 2 of the buttons didnt work. spent a LONG time on hold waiting to speak with someone. they are sending 2 new buttons and said expect to wait at least a couple weeks to receive them. will update when buttons are received
I love the concept of affordable scaled down units, and hope Arcade1Up will succeed. Unfortunately Quality Control was sadly lacking for this unit. Holes drilled for the display panel did not align (minor issue), but more importantly the mylar display was heavily scratched in the middle, from top to bottom, and on the black bezel. The kicker is that the screen came with a protective layer facing out, but the scratches were on the *bottom* layer facing the display LCD. There was also a weird chemical spray that clouds the mylar when viewed at an angle, and lots of sawdust. I cleaned the sawdust, colored in the scratches in bezel with a black marker, but there was nothing to be done for the massive scratches and chemical clouding. I read another customer finally got in contact with customer service who promised to send a new mylar cover, but even if they were to send me another mylar cover I would then need to reopen / reassemble everything again. When something is on sale (as this was at Walmart.com) there probably is a reason why. Caveat emptor. I will try one more Arcade1Up unit, and if that also has these QC issues that will be the 2nd and final one I purchase.
This machine is garbage! Christmas morning and broken!
The sound for the 4 games that are provided have a significant lag of about 1/2 a second. This means when you fire a bullet in asteroids, the actual sound is not heard until the bullet is almost half way across the screen! Or when a asteroid explodes, the explosion sound happens after the asteroid is gone. It seems other people don't seem to be bothered by this but the sound lag is so painfully obvious to me that this is a major disappointment.
