I don't understand some of the negative reviews, this is a Tron arcade cabinet in every way shape or form. If you ever played the original Tron and/or Discs of Tron like I did back in the day, the nostalgia will come washing over you the second you start playing. The customizations you can make to each game, such as adding more lives will let you get further than you could in the original arcade, which is nice for those of us not as skilled as others. The only negative thing I can say is the trigger on the joystick is a little stiff and I think it's edges could be rounded a little more. If that happens to you, then rest assured there are easy to implement aftermarket mods you can apply.
I am really pleased with my Tron machine. The package arrived in great condition, and no pieces were missing nor were they damaged. I didn't find it any harder than other Arcade1ups to build, and just made sure to avoid all those gotchas I've had in the past with this machine. (ie making sure holes are facing up, always using the right sized screw, not forcing the second side to fit into all the different dowels.) The machine is definitely heavier and taller than most other Arcade1ups, and although cool - the shape of the Tron machine doesn't lend itself to being easily picked up. The game play is great if you love Tron and Discs of Tron. Keep in mind these are older games, and although nostalgic, they are pretty basic. I haven't had issues with the arcade stick breaking (or even giving an indicators of breaking), and even though the spinner doesn't zip around like the original. I kind of like the slower speed of it as it helps with my accuracy. The design of the machine is great, and the lighting really makes it sparkle. It took me a few minutes to figure out the button next to the screen turns on the lights at the bottom of the monitor. I enjoy seeing my score compared to others' online - and it adds a little competitive fun not found in the original
The joystick could be a little better but it's not bad. Most likely I will need to replace it with aftermarket. Even with the joystick I still highly recommend this game! Amazing side art, graphics, and all the lights are outstanding. Also, there is wifi capability so you can post your scores on the internet. Very cool!
If you grew up playing this game at the arcade, this is about as close as one can get to the real thing. Easy to assemble. The unique controls, sights, sounds, and all of the games of the original Tron are there. Time to get atop that leader board.
I think they did overall a great job on re-creating the original look and feel of the Tron game. The lighting, the graphics, and the controls were all re-created with an eye to recreate the game faithfully within the bounds of the lower cost of the machine compared to the original which was built for commercial use. It was well packed, with clear instructions. They did a great job on making the assembly as straightforward as possible. My complaint is that there were mistakes in the manufacturing/assembly of both the marquee and the lighting bar. My marquee arrived with wrinkles in the material, which in fairness aren't super noticeable unless you're looking for them. The light bar sticker assemble was way off. Attached in a straight line until about halfway through then it went off in a diagonal. Doesn't look very good. I'll be reaching out to customer service with pictures to get replacements for both. Besides those two things, which I'm sure will be replaced, I love this machine. I have been looking for a Tron arcade game for a while. It's great to see they made a quality re-creation.
The cabinet is gorgeous with all of the neon and blacklighting and the game plays the way I remember it in arcades. Only two issues: First issue was the side cabinetry was mislabeled and thankfully from pictures I was able to figure it out that they reversed the left side and right side. Second issue bolt holes were not drilled all the way through the side cabinetry. Starter holes were on the inside, so I had to drill my own holes through the sticker that is the outside cabinet art. You know a drill bit shreds a sticker when it punctures through. Thankfully I had enough Macguyver skills to drill through on one side and drill a little wider on the outside to recess the bolt heads the way they were supposed to be.
Reviewed from an actual purchaser of this product who has received, assembled, and play tested it; not an armchair critic. I also own an original full size Tron arcade so have something to compare to. Plan on a solid 2 hours for clean assembly. The joystick is surprisingly 1:1 size, hefty and translucent but slightly darker blue. It a little looser axis movement than the original (though it could be that my original 1982 Tron is a little stiff with age...) which feels a little sloppy in comparison but no big issue. Trigger button is a modern microswitch as expected so a little "clicky" but a clean pull. The deflect thumb button is much softer push than an original DOT and feels a little sloppy but does not present play issues. The spinner is surprisingly the proper multi-function push-pull-spin for DOT and generally works well for both games. Unfortunately DOT does not have Sark's voice clips and the graphicsonly include the platforms, walls, and characters similar to the original DOT roms. They did not try to visually add-in the analog depth of field effects created by the various bezels of the original DOT, so it does look a bit "plain" compared to the incredible visuals of the original. Cabinet has a light up marquee, light up plexi panel beneath the control panel, and light up strip above the CP (where the black light was on the original Tron), the latter of which you can change to various colors which was a neat, unexpected addition. Overall A1up did a great job trying to stay as true to the spirit of the original cabinet within the obvious constraints of what it is they produce. You can tell they really poured their effort into this, right down to the original profile shape of the cabinet itself. I hear so many people complaining about quality and price point but when you see the complexity of what they were attempting to do here along with the proper spinner and joystick, licensing from Disney, current supply chain issues (price of container shipping) etc. it's really not that bad. The assembled cabinet weighs over 100 pounds. I can see the biggest problem being the potential need for what appear to be very proprietary replacement parts down the road. There seems to be little leeway for using anything other than the original A1up parts should the need arise.
When assembled it looks great. With a couple of mods (~$200 extra) you can get it close to the original. The games are pretty much like the old ones and this a good show piece. The joystick/flightstick looks cool when lit up, but its functionality is not good. It gets stuck all the time. It has no bounce back to the center so you have to manually put it back to center. Besides gameplay, typing in a long Wi-Fi password is just awful as it sticks and just scrolls through the letters. I wasn't expecting arcade quality but a joystick that doesn't have enough spring to center itself back is not acceptable. Several others have complained about this online, too. Most likely I'll need to buy another mod when it's available.
As other reviewer says, it's about a 2 hour build if you consider the unboxing and organization time. It's not a bad build. Cabinet looks great. I'd like to review the game play, but the unit I received has a slight issue, in the manufacturing process, they used a volume switch instead of an on/off switch. How do I know this, I have the Star Wars game. the on/off stays to the left or right and the volume stays in the center and returns to the center when you release it. So, you can imagine my surprise when i go to turn the game on and make that discovery. After contacting Arcade 1Up with a service ticket, they are quick to respond. I document the issue with video. Lady agrees that its a manufacturing mistake. The only issue is that there are no spare parts for the game available at this time, so they can not send me the correct part to fix it and don't have a time frame to get one in. So now I have a useless $700 dollar game cabinet that is collecting dust, with no way to fix it - assuming that it will work since the switch is wrong - who knows if it would fry the electronics. They suggested I return this one and order a new one, so I can spend another wad of money and time to assemble that one.
I was pretty excited with this Tron machine out of the box. The build was really smooth, the cabinet was solid and gameplay was exactly as I remembered. The fun lasted about three weeks - with maybe 30 mins of gameplay max in a day. The joystick function (specifically upwards/forward motion) stopped working properly (action onscreen stuck constantly moving in an upward motion). Going online to Arcade1UP support led to an automated troubleshooting guide that walked me through making sure connections were complete and a view of the joystick from below made it apparent that the forward/upward sensor/trigger was simply sticking and not bouncing back as the other directions do. It could be manually "reset" but sticks again after reassembly and reuse. Arcade1UP required videos to prove the issue and after a few emails and three days later, agreed to send a replacement joystick. That was a month ago. A month with an unplayable cabinet. Follow-up emails have only received the response that the part is backordered and they cannot provide an estimated date to ship. An inquiry into a refund tells me that's between me and Wal-Mart. This from a system whose materials in the box urge you NOT to return the system with any problems but instead to work directly with Arcade1UP. I cannot expect Wal-Mart to accept a return of a console that has been totally assembled nearly two months after my purchase. So I'm stuck - and out $700. This was my first Arcade1UP experience and I was concerned about quality and wear over time - but I never imagined something would break after only three weeks and that follow-up for repairs would be so disappointing. Never again. I'd suggest anyone looking to purchase use a credit card that offers protection against this type of swindle because Arcade1UP seems to have no interest whatsoever in ensuring their customers are satisfied.
