Review of ASUS Pro WRX80E-SAGE SE WIFI Motherboard

Gordon A. Fenton October 12, 2022

This is a nice board. My only complaints about it are that it is huge, heavy, and expensive. It is listed as an eATX board, but it wouldn't fit into a BeQuiet Dark Base Pro case, even though that case said it was eATX compatible. This motherboard must be an eeATX -- fortunately it did fit into a Fractal Design Define 7 XL case. The final build weighs a ton, so don't build this if you have a bad back. For a AMD Threadripper 5975WX build, there aren't too many choices in compatible motherboards. This all being said it works well with my AMD Threadripper 5975WX CPU and has plenty of room for the Noctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3 cooler, which I put two fans on. Unfotunately, the cooler blows upwards while the case blows from front to back. It would have been nicer if the CPU socket had been rotated to allow the cooler to also blow from front to back. Only one other minor problem with the board, which might be a BIOS version issue: on bootup, you can't enter setup using a wireless keyboard (e.g., Logitech with unifying receiver) -- the keyboard is ignored until after boot up. So this means that to get into the BIOS Setup, you need to plug in a wired USB keyboard and hit F2. Once you are in setup, or in the OS, the wireless keyboard works again.

A great motherboard.

The motheroard is amazing. Like all motherboards a much better manual with much more detail would be appreciated. Great manual would get you 5-stars.

Incredible VRM, connectivity, and reliability!

TTYI3ZEAQZ September 20, 2023

I bought this a couple of months ago for a TR Pro Zen 3 CPU. This motherboard is built like a tank and very heavy. This thing will not bend nor flex. It's over perfect for the Threadripper series!

Pro WS WRX80E-SAGE SE WIFI good but not great

Blackbox August 31, 2022

Build quality is really good and it's the board Puget Systems uses. Full 16X PCIe 4 for all slots is what made me buy this over the new Asrock board. . However, some components have newer parts now, so ASUS board really could have benefitted from a refresh in time for the 5000 series (AX200, X550-AT2 NICs, ASM 3242). Not providing a Block diagram with details about which lanes are on Chipset/CPU made things much more difficult than they should have been. The BIOS seems lacking compared to similar boards from Asrock and Gigabyte. Minus 1 star for lack of official Thunderbolt support on a Workstation class board. The fact that I was able to get Thunderbolt 3 partially running with a Titan Ridge card is the only reason I didn't return the board in favor of the AsRock WRX80 Creator. Minus 1 star for no planned PBO support. This board is built like a tank, has the best VRMs, and previous sage x299 boards have had OC support. It's disappointing to hear reports that ASUS dropped the ball on this. I'm still hoping a BIOS update will enable support in the future despite prior claims to the contrary.

The network card on this is locked to 4 year old drivers, and will constantly crash if you attempt to use it in any way. It's a lemon. Don't buy. Not to mention that the sellers reboxed an open item card, and did not include the entire package it was supposed to come with.
