After working from home for more than 1 year, as a software developer, I really need a nice laptop for both work and non-work uses. I have a powerful desktop, but I also need a powerful laptop to move with me inside my home. Plus, from time to time I prefer to sit on the couch, do some coding with TV playing in the background. Finally, I need a laptop that is better than any of my current ones, including the work issued (which isn't really exciting).
There are some minimal requirements from me:
- AMD CPU with 8 cores / 16 threads
- 32 GB DDR4 memory
- 1TB M.2 NVMe PCIe 3.0 SSD
- Higher than FHD native resolution
- Good battery life (and prefer no touch screen)
- Thin and light (prefer 14 inch)
- Can play games OK (for best gaming experience I have my PC desktop)
- Look nice
I have looked a lot brands and models for many months, nothing really feels meeting all the requirements until I saw this 2021 model of G14! It's really a nice fit and without hesitation I placed an order with BestBuy.
The AniMe Matrix is such a cool and innovative feature! With so many laptops out there, we need creativity and ASUS is good at it (another great example is the ASUS double screen design in various Duo models).
I also love the no camera design, despite Zoom is so "essential" these day, I don't miss meetings and I prefer focused time (TV playing in the background is fine).
After a few weeks, I can attest that this is truly what I want and it's my daily driver now.
It runs all my work tasks faster, but without big noise like some other laptops I have.
Needless to say, I do not have any problem with running non-work stuff.
Gaming is fine, I do not expect a powerful desktop's experience with a very high resolution. At WQHD (2560 x 1440) I enjoyed playing most of my games (haven't tested all, but for heavy games I'd use my desktop).
I don't really run benchmarks but just observe the daily experiences. I'm satisfied.
- Audio is fine
- Backlight keyboard is fine
- Typing experience is fine
- Touchpad experience is fine
- I/O ports are fine
- WiFi is fine
I appreciate it comes with Windows 10 Pro, not Home.
And I know it will be able to upgrade to Windows 11 later this year.
Weight and dimension are fine to be thin and light, considering all the packed power.
Since there is nothing perfect, I do have few "I wish":
- 64 GB memory (32 x 2 with 32 fixed on board is fine), but that is only for running some demanding virtual machine(s) - work related limits.
- Better fingerprint sensor. From time to time I need to press down my finger for a second time to login to Windows. Maybe I need to re-enroll my finger in different angles.
