I'm not a fan of the cost, because it's gone up along with all other grocery items, but it is more cost effective than the loose seed mixes because there's no way for them to throw out what they don't want to get at the parts they like best. Therefore, they have to work harder to get their favorites loose and the rest stays attached until some other variety of bird comes and eats the other. This way I feed MANY types of birds, not just woodpeckers. Finches, Towhees, Chickadees, Jays, Sparrows, Wrens, Juncos and Nuthatches. And minimal seed on the ground to attract rats, mice and pigeons. And it lasts a long time (couple of weeks at least) so I'm not out there refilling seed feeders every couple of days. And when it's very small and starting to fall apart, I take the remains and add them to my squirrel feeder. The squirrels are more than happy to clean up the leftovers.
Why would you pay more? The birds love it, especially robins, bluebirds, woodpeckers and cardinals. Comes quickly, costs a fraction of other rounds the same size and lasts a long time.
The woodpeckers (and squirrels) enjoy this seed cake very much. It attracts them right away. It also drew in white-breasted nut hatches and black-capped chickadees.
The logs are a big hit with the small birds and big birds in our wildlife area. We live in the country and have three feeding stations that we put logs on. Individual logs normally last 10 days. We welcome all birds to eat.
Birds love the Audubon Woodpecker seed snack log! I have several hummingbirds that I feed suet too. I bought this for something different, and they love it! I still keep the suet hung so they have a choice. There are several different kinds of birds that come and eat the seed log.
Woodpeckers, blue jays, cardinals and finches sue do love this roll...it did come damaged in some places...still put it up for the birds to enjoy this very cold winter in Michigan...
Product is fine but packaging was poor. Seed stacks were packed loose in a bag with no protective boxing or protection causing the seed stacks to hit against each other during transit and seeds crumble and fall off when opening a stack. Not what I paid for.
I love feeding my local wild birds. I recently noticed a woodpecker has been coming around, pecking away at my tree so I thought this would be a better alternative for him to peck away on. It was, and WAS a hit with all the other birds and even my squirrels. I don't know why or how, but I recently had to throw away my 5th one of these due to MAJOR moth infestation AND mold. Sure, SOME birds eat bugs, but not all. And for $9 a log, I NEVER expected to basically pay $9 for a moth infested tower of NASTINESS. This last one was infested and the one prior was falling apart and PACKED with mold. 10 out of 10, I would NOT recommend wasting your money on this. The company has changed the look of the packaging, tricking buyers into thinking the company has released newer woodpecker logs, but I think they ONLY slapped a purple label on an older log. I cannot think of how else the last 2 woodpecker logs were either moldy or infested with moths and other bugs I have never seen before. (You have been warned- overpriced moth cake that will infest your home if you don't put things in airtight bags/totes. If I wanted bugs I would leave doors %26 windows open and could get them for free)
My program is with the store delivering old bird seed stack that has has bugs in to! I pay way too much for it but my birds love them . Last time it totally fell apart and evidence to bug infestation was horrible and today there is total infestation again!!!! And the moths flew out of them!!!!!!! Very disappointed!!!! It was delivered by a driver not with my pick up order so I have no idea which store it came from!!!!!!!!!
I don't recommend buying this product if you're going to have it shipped. I ordered three and they did not pack it with any kind of packing material. when I opened each seed cake. they just literally fell apart. It needs to be packed with some kind of bubble wrap or paper to protect. I have purchased these in the store before and it was fine. I will never again have them shipped. It was a total waste of money.
