Bad Day At Black Rock is one of cinema's all-time great neo-noirs. This particular WB Blu-ray package at a best value price at Wal-Mart is the best physical media version of the movie available. An excellent color grading, a good HD presentation from a 2K Master, and several good soundtrack options make this a "must have" movie on BD.
This Warner Archive Blu-ray of Bad Day at Black Rock is widely considered an excellent release and a massive upgrade over the previous DVD. It features a sterling 1080p transfer that handles the early CinemaScope (2.55:1 aspect ratio) beautifully. Reviewers note that the Eastman Color, which can sometimes look washed out in older transfers, looks rich and stable here. The fine detail is sharp enough to clearly see the textures in Spencer Tracy's weathered face and the dusty, isolated landscapes of Lone Pine. The disc retains a natural, film-like grain structure without any distracting digital noise reduction (DNR). It feels authentic to its 1955 theatrical roots. It includes a robust DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 track. André Previn's score sounds particularly crisp and fills the soundstage well for a stereo track of this era. While it isn't a "loaded" boutique box set, it does include a very high-quality audio commentary by film historian Dana Polan. He provides great insight into the film's "CinemaScope blocking"—how director John Sturges used the ultra-wide frame to emphasize the town's isolation and the tension between characters. You might notice some "CinemaScope mumps" in certain close-ups (a slight stretching effect), but this is actually a known quirk of the original lenses used in 1954 and is considered a sign of an accurate, faithful transfer rather than a defect in the Blu-ray itself. It's definitely a "must-own" for a Warner Archive collection.
Classic movie with classic star Spencer Tracy. Is you like Spencer Tracy then this movie is a must buy. I like the story and the acting. I would rather buy it than pay to rent it. A great price too.
