plunger bent a little, but still works
I bought this because I needed the chain tool; I had no need for the extra links. The hole that the link-punching pin is threaded through is not straight, so when you're pressing the tip of the pin against the chain link, you're pressing at it from an angle. This makes getting the link in and out so much harder than it needs to be. I had to grip the tool with pliers to have enough leverage to turn it. On my fourth use, I was pushing back in a link that I had accidentally pushed out entirely. I got the end of the link back in, albeit crookedly, and since it's so hard to get it back in at all, I settled for this. The tip broke off because it couldn't handle the sideways force of being pressed at such an angle. If you don't put yourself in this situation, the tool will probably serve you for a while longer. On another chain where I kept the end of the link in the chain, it went alright. Not good or easy, but alright. Maybe just this particular one was like this. Probably not, since it's so cheap.
Good for one time usage the black part bent when trying to do the chain repair.
So at first when I was using a brand new chain it popped it out with ease but it stripped the thread causing metal shavings to get fired into my finger, when I used it on a rusty chain it bent the link, btw you have to use a hammer (no screw head for a drill or screwdriver) just to turn it, at least this product knows you will screw up your chain by using it so they supply a replacement link and a decent supply of alc pads for the trouble of even buying this trash, remove or replace the chain tool and id say it would be a good repair kit for the field if your in a pinch.
I was riding my bike when the chain broke so I bought this to fix the chain. I know how to use tools properly this one is just not good. It broke on first use. It never even budged the rivit. My chain was not rusty or anything. Just a waste of 5 bucks. the little pin would not stay lined up and it broke. You had to crank it down and it wouldn't even turn anymore. going to try and find a better one somewhere else.
Wish I'd checked reviews before trying to use. Bought this one because it was after local bike shop hours. Should have waited and sprung the extra few bucks for a useful tool. Like about everyone else here, the tool broke on the first use. I got the rivet partially out, but upon realizing abnormal amount of resistance it was taking to get the rivet out, I looked and saw that the alignment of the pin, teeth, and link were all over the place. Completing the removal was impossible with the crooked alignment and stubby "handles." Then, when trying to back the pin out of the link, I had to use pliers to try to loosen it, which immediately bent the wing on the tool. When the pin finally backed off the rivet, it just fell free from the tool, most likely having broke before it could even drive the rivet half way out. Seems to be made of the same garbage, die-cast pot metal as a Hotwheel toy car. Absolute waste of money and time! Avoid! *** I am aware of the use of such a tool, and know how to seat the link flush before tensioning the tool. Not user error! Unless you count the error in judgement by buying it in the first place!
at first it broke my chain ring, then it broke on its own. and yes i was going over tutorials and i have used one before at a bike shop where the dude taught me to use it. so, this is just a pretty horrible product. i wish i could have used that money in something else
No kidding, the tool broke the very first time I used it. I bought the chain beaker not knowing there were little links included. If I had noticed the cheap price I would have guessed this tool is not good.
it was working fine then the pin broke in half so i bought another 1 and this one broke from the side of the tool
It broke on first use before removing chain pin. Impractical design as well. It's hard to get leverage to turn it. But, since it snaps after you turn it with just a little tension, I guess there was no need to consider fixing this design flaw.
