I have used this brand of yarn for several years and will continue to do so. I live in a non-company owned retirement community and we have a craft %26 bake sale every year. All items are baked and made by residents and all funds are given to our Employee Appreciation Fund and divided and given to each employee!
The Bernat Super Value Yarn is just that. A super value. It is an acrylic yarn so it is a little stiff but also a little softer than Red Heart super saver yarn. It has a slight sheen to it which is nice but not overpowering. I also like the colors better than the Red Heart, they are more contemporary in my opinion the way they're blended, more muted. Kind of hard to describe what I mean exactly lol. I have made 2 children's ponchos and a hat so far with this yarn and am very pleased with both. This will be my go to value yarn from now on.
An eBay buddy and I are making a couple of granny square afghans together. She started using this yarn because Red Heart Super Saver yarns have become harder and coarser. This yarn has the same "hand" as the "old technology" Red Heart Super Saver. The colors are not the same as RH, but close. Her "signature" is to use this yarn for centers and third row of the squares (counting the center as first row), with Red Heart Soft yarn as second row. I then group the three row squares into a "4-patch square" and crochet a border of this yarn in True Gray around that. Then, the "4-patch squares" are assembled in random color combinations. I ordered this particular yarn from Walmart.com because I couldn't find the colors I needed in local craft stores. "My" local Wal-Mart stores discontinued, for a while, the entire sewing and crafts department. They have reestablished a small crafts department again, but selection of everything is very limited. I was surprised that Walmart.com had the selection of yarns and colors it does.
Good price. Even better was the fact that I had gone to 4 craft stores and could not find the color that I wanted. Low and Behold I somehow came up with WALMART.COM and there it was. No more running around and spending $$ on gas. It was shipped to the store and arrived 4 days earlier than the proposed date of arrival.............Thank you WALMART...........for a job not only well done, but also in advance of the target date and FREE Shipping. Who could ask for anything more ??? Appreciate it all.... You are the greatest. :) :-) Do people really read these???? This is the third time I have had a questionnaire for my comments ???
I was very surprised that this inexpensive yarn was as soft and smooth as it was for such a low price. Bernat Super Value Yarn lives up to its name. I have used Red Heart's super saver yarn and found it to have a bit of a rough, scratchy feel as it slides across my hands when knitting or crocheting. Bernat Super Value is much softer. The color I bought is much more beautiful than I expected as well. Add to all this the fact that my site-to-store order arrived much sooner than promised!
I am knitting a striped scarf, and I saw this color being used in the UK. It is teamed with another color and is unusual and eye catching. I have to say that I copied someone else as I wouldn't have had the originality to do it myself. This pink is unusual. The yarn is good for what I need and will also go well with a patchwork blanket I am knitting. It is good too for when knitting for a teddy bear or dolls.
I was knitting a blanket for my 10 year old granddaughter. She had picked the colors of dark heather and neon orange. Walmart was the only location where I could find a coordinating neon orange. It has worked into a beautiful shaded blanket and is very warm and cuddly since I combined the gray and orange together as one stitch. I was surprised at how inexpensive the yarn was. The shipping charges were less than $1.00 and I received the yarn 2 days after I ordered it.
I purchased 4 skeins online and even though it says "no dye lot" on the label, the match to a skein purchase locally was not 100%. The skeins purchased together matched beautifullyThe difference isn't enough to make a difference in my project, but it would if the project was large and 1 solid color - like an Afghan. I'd give 4 1/2 stars if I could. The yarn itself is very nice and it's not the manufacturers fault I didn't buy enough thefirst time. But I thought the point of "no dye lot" meant every skein everywhere matched.
It's not the softest yarn, but it is very consistent in color and weight/thickness. It's a little splitty at times. My go-to method for softening crunchy yarn is saturating my finished project with cheap hair conditioner and letting it soak in the washing machine in hot water for about an hour, then wash with hypoallergenic detergent.
The yarn is Bernat Ombre, but it is not Big Ball, as advertised as a Memorial Day Weekend Special. On line it states 10.5 ounces, 582 yards; received Super Value, 5 ounce, 275 yards. Walmart owes me 921 yards of Bernat worsted ombre in the color Sea Taupe.
