My shetland foundered/developed Cushings and I was afraid he'd never be able to be back out in the pasture with his buddies. I ordered this grazing muzzle and am delighted that he's safely back out with his companions. Mini size fits him perfectly and he adjusted to it without any trouble. What a relief!
I have had to use a grazing muzzle on my draft cross for most of the year for a few years and have tried many different brands of grazing muzzles. This one is my favorite and I always come back to it. It is high quality and last months of months before the bottom wears out. It is a little heavy though. 4 Velcro loops hold it on a halter including on the front of the nose (unlike other brands) which help keep it on if your horse rubs their face to try and get it of.
I purchase grazing muzzles every year for my 5 stock-bred horses. I am very pleased with product! Love that it attaches to the halter. I can ensure my horses have a properly fitting, comfortable halter. Hard to remove! HA! Pleased to say my one gelding who destroys about everything has not been able to get it off! Will be a repeat buyer for life! THANK YOU for making a wonderful product, to bad i didn't think of this myself! ;)
My mare accepted the muzzle easily (with treats!) and has been wearing it for a couple of weeks now. She has not figured out how to remove it and there are no rubs. It is sturdy and was easy to attach to her regular halter.
I have easy keepers & last year they porked up before I used the grazing muzzles. I have found by trial & error that the muzzle that attaches to the horses harness works better than the muzzle all in one i.e which comes as a halter with attached muzzle. My 4 horses were successful in removing this one but could not remove the muzzle attached to their own halter.
We have a horse prone to laminitis, and these grazing muzzles work wonders. She can be out "grazing" with no fear of over-eating. Keep checking the size of the hole, as it will enlarge over time. We keep a backup on hand when it comes time to replace.
I buy one of these every year. This style of grazing muzzle works the best for my QH mare. It is easy to affix to her halter and stays in place. I have minimal issues with rubbing. It lasts her one season ( April to November daily use ) until she wears the hole in the bottom plate open.
First, the size issue. I ordered the cob size for our 13 hh pony. It was way too small. He couldn't even open his mouth. He needs the horse size. One of our boarders had to get the extra large for her horse with a typical size head. Second, the actual muzzle. The actual muzzle is great. It is sturdy, effective and has not created any rubs around the nose. We have had only one issue. If the Velcro is extended too fat, it is very easy for the horse to rub off. I paired this with nylon Velcro breakaway halter sold by Smartpak. So, I feel like out pony is very safe. I can also easily replace one component or the other if I ever need to. I would buy again knowing the adjustment I would need to make in size.
I bought a cob size muzzle for our 13 hh Quarter Pony. He wears a pony bridle and cob halter. The cob size muzzle wouldn't even fit over his mouth let alone give him room to open his mouth to eat. We easily returned the muzzle for a horse size the horse size fits him well. The muzzle easily attaches to his breakaway halter. He has not managed to pull it off or get it caught on anything. He has not come in with any rubs. Last year, he chewed through the hole enough to double size the hole by the end of the season. So, I went with the separate basket to make replacement easier in the future as needed.
I bought this muzzle for my mini-horse about one month ago. He does get kind of sad when I have to put it on him, but I think he realizes he gets to go graze once it is on. Before the muzzle he would gorge himself just in a few minutes and then he would bloat and his poop would become runny. Now is he able to graze when the other horse does. Really worth the money.
