These go well as a side. However we were out of hamburger helper one day. So I made these ON THE STOVE, mixed in the hamburger. I've never bought hamburger helper again. This only works if you don't put them in the oven. But as a side oven is the easiest %26 tastes even better. Don't skip the tasty crust on the pan.... awesome!
I've loved these potatoes since I was little, eating them for Sunday dinner w/my family while I still needed a booster-seat to reach the table properly. The only thing I don't like about the product is that my family eats them so fast, I have to fight for my share. Thank goodness for the double-boxes or I probably wouldn't get ANY!
These are good, though they do need more flavor, and thats easy. I add: 1 tlbs dehydrated Onions or 1 tsp granulated Onion, 1/4 tsp Garlic powder, 1/8 tsp German Thyme, 1/8 tsp salt and a shy 1/4 tsp fresh ground black pepper. If i have bacon grease on hand I substitute 1-1/2 tlb of butter with bacon grease. tastes really good.
Quick and easy side dish for a meal. The instructions are very accurate and the dish is delicious. Very creamy and cheesy. I make the double package for family meals. Everyone loves it and it never makes 2 trips around the table. I also love to add a little ham to the dish to make it a stand alone meal. I have loved this dish since I was a child and I really appreciate that I don't have to peel and slice raw potatoes to get started!
The family pack size is enough for supper and a following lunch. Prep couldn't be simpler ( potatoes, sauce mix, butter and boiling water) and goes from box to plate in record time thru the oven! I throw cubed ham into it and bread crumbs on top before baking to make a complete, hearty meal.
I love the flavor and the ease of making these scalloped potatoes on the stove top. It cooks so fast. I put them in a casserole dish and cover it with some cheese and put it in the oven until the rest of dinner is ready to serve. Unfortunately for a family of 4 you need to make both bags together. It tastes so yummy you don't want a small portion.
If you par boil the potatoes beforehand in the hot water the directions include and add a little cheese and cream in place of the milk you get a really heightened version. These IMO are better the second day after sitting in the fridge absorbing the sauce but that's just my opinion. I've used these to make potato cheese soup on the fly when I didn't want or need a full batch of soup but rather just something for myself. They're good to just have available much like a box of stuffing mix. Handy. Versatile. Affordable.
What used to taste like actual potatoes, something I'd be willing to feed to my family in a pinch, these products taste so processed, gritty, mushy. No, I haven't changed cooking method, this is not 'user error'--I've been eating this occasionally since the 90s, and it has never tasted this...bad. As though it's not real potatoes, and certainly not real cheese.
They could've put a little bit more in the box due to it being a casserole for family most definitely get more than one box for a family of four be sure to boil the scallops long from what they are supposedto before baking because they seem a little stale after cooking them on the stove
I don't buy this brand but it was on sale, or maybe the only scalloped selection. It had no problem, Betty Crocker, right? Wrong! Apparently Betty is not watching the competition and has become Co. Placient. It was like eating a box of chemicals. I guess I was. Tastes like chemicals, must be. I couldn't get it past my mouth. Garbage, yep, went into the garbage. There was nothing in this that tasted like potatoes or the sauce, that makes them scalloped potatoes. Betty Crocker and Chef Boy R D, they are taking all they can get from Americans during this time. Remember, remember, remember. YUCK Betty, you can keep it.
