Nutritious, delicious, cooks easily and perfect for breakfast or soup. I use my mom's recipe to make a healthy breakfast with dry fruits and i can eat it everyday. Clean grains that seem like they were handpicked, loves Most Bob's red mill products that i use.
This barley has larger barley-corns than the Korean hulled barely. I pre-cook 1 cup of the barley in chicken stock 1:3 in a 4 cup glass measuring cup. Give it max power for 5 minutes until ot boils, then turn off for an hour. Check for degree of completion, and adjust heat to maintain a simmer. When barley has simmered 1 hour and absorbed most of the water, transfer to stock pot, add chopped chicken breast and additional boiling water as needed.
I really like this barley. The flavor and texture are superior to the boxed quick versions. You do have to simmer it for quite a while to achieve the best texture, but it is worth it. I like to make beef and barely soup. Dice stew meat into bite sized pieces and brown it in a Dutch oven. Then add about 48 oz of beef broth, a cup each of diced carrots, celery and onions, and three table spoons of tomato paste. Bring it to a boil and then simmer it on medium for one hour. Then add a cup of this barley and let it simmer for another hour. Delicious!
There is a wonderful recipe on the back of the bag. It came out amazing. The flavor of this grain is just fantastic. It was fresh and came in a convenient resealable bag. It is wonderful in baking, soups, salads, and well just about any way you want to prepare it. Bob's Red Mill is a great company, and their website offers numerous recipe options as well.
Please keep this in your food storage. Check out its nutritional value. Super easy to cook, has a satisfying chew and mild nutty, grain taste, when made in soups, or like rice. High in fiber, and important vitamins including selenium, manganese, and copper. This grain diabetic and vegan friendly! It is NOT gluten friendly. A wonderful taste, IMO.
I'm trying to eat healthier, so I thought I'd try these out. I've never had Pearl Barley before, only Quick Barley. After 20 minutes of a low boil, they puffed nicely, %26 gave a chicken stew a great taste. Good price value. I will be buying these again...
I like this brand and it was very affordable through Walmart. This is the pearl version so just remember that it needs to be cook a bit longer than the flat looking one you get at most stores. The plus is that it is healthier and has more nutrition. I just add it to my pot about 20/25 minutes before I start adding other ingredients and it works fine. I also cook for my fur babies and they love it too.
I like Bob's Red Mill Pearl Barley because first of all, it's a biblical food, second, it's good for our health, and third, it has a recipe in back fora Lentil- Barley Soup. it's a good size bag too. one pound for more than two meals/ recipes
Love this stuff! It helps my acid reflux! And it's delicious. It's got to where it's hard to find anymore. So I bought this larger quantity and stays good for a good while.
As an avid buyer of Bob's Mill products, I was surprised that this tastes worse than Glick's. I would say it's more of a dull, grainy taste, flavorless, and isn't as tender. Since I use this as a breakfast cereal with milk and sugar, the taste is blaringly different as opposed to if I were baking. After cooking it four times and comparing, I'll be sticking with Glicks.
