Last summer I planted two Shikou Eggplants for the first time, Not knowing much about them I just planted and occasionally fertilized with Miracle Grow while they were young. These two plants grew very well and produced so many eggplants that I couldn't keep up. My neighbors helped me out. Easy to grow in New England and now a must for my garden.
This variety is new to me. I grew it on a trellis and had great results (Southwest Washington State) They grow to impressive size and are still tender. One cucumber makes a good size salad. The peel is very thin and needs not be peeled-so less work, less waste. They are crisp and sweet, very juicy and held up well in cucumber salads with vinegar. They were so good in fact, we really didn't eat any of our lemon cucumbers or pickling cucumbers as we had so many of these and they were by far the best to eat fresh. The Japanese cukes came on and were also done earlier than my lemon cukes and pickling cukes so I will keep that in mind for next year. It is October 3 and the Japanese cukes are no longer producing while the others are, though slowly, still growing. We did have a wind storm that damaged the Japanese cucumber vines and so that could be the reason (they were growing taller, on a metal trellis where the other varieties were lower to the ground and attached to more natural materials) so they were hit harder. Bottom line, I will be growing these next year and the year after. Sorry lemon cucumbers, you are no longer my favorite.
First time planting so not sure if there was something special I needed to do but I got only one flower and one eggplant out of my one potted plant I put in the soil of my outdoor garden. My soil is organic and really rich. The Bonnie tomatoes did great. The cucumbers were awesome too. The green pepper only produced two peppers.
