I researched the best aerator to purchase & this was number one or two depending on the article. It's fantastic! I used it to turn the soil in my garden & I use it to aerate my composter. It's so easy & saves my back. I even lent it to a neighbor who praised it as well.
We have a very deep and sturdy compost pile, and from some of the other reviews of this product, I was afraid it would be up to the task. But it works just fine.
Easy to use, effectively stirs the compost without a lot of back breaking labor.
Sturdy, works well, a pleasure to use it.
This garden aerator by Bosmere is a generally good design. It seems to do quite well at mixing my compost. The double wing design is an added benefit though the higher set does seem to clog up at times, defeating their purpose. One thing that was a bit troubling is that the design pictured and I had ordered was NOT the one that arrived at my home. I had ordered the tool with the curved, cane-like top and side handle while what arrived was a T-top handle with no side handle. Two distinct styles made by the same company. The prices are similar so I decided to keep the one I received and not mess around with time-consuming exchanges. All-in-all, a fine product but a less than stellar got between in Walmart.
Dirt can clog wings but all compost aerators do this. A simple hit on the side of your compost bin will loosen. Two handles make pushing into compost much easier. Need to keep Allen wrench to retighten side handle as it can become wobbly if not tightened well.
I find that the flanges do not deploy as I lift the unit upward -- they stay flush with the main shaft, and really don't engage with the compost pile. I will get my bending tools out and see if I can make them have a better "catch" on the compost
Good sturdy compost aerator, the wings, even when closed make it difficult to get down into the pile. I have to twist the aerator a lot to work down into pile, once that is done this tool pulls up easily with wings open and helps turn the compost in the pile. I would have rated higher if it was easier to work this tool down into the compost pile. That is the only negative.
It works best on lawn clippings where the compost is matted.
