"Break Up The Concrete" features some of Chrissie Hynde's greatest vocal performances ever. She can sound like a punk icon, a celestial angel and a tender, sensitive soul. Highlights of the exemplary CD include "The Nothing Maker", "Love's A Mystery", Almost Perfect", "You Didn't Have To" and the poignant "One Thing Never Changed". Hynde's duet will Willie Nelson "Both Sides of Goodbye" is incredibly touching. Chrissie Hynde is my favorite female vocalist and she' also rock music's most adamant animal rights activist and vehement vegetarian.

After taking up reggae influences on 'Loose Screw,' it only makes sense that Hynde and Company bring it all back home with some hybrid country-rock cookin'. Certainly more progressive than most country, The Pretenders can nimbly draw from the frontwoman's toughness and tenderness with "Boots of Chinese Plastic" and "Rosalee" excelling at the former and "Love's a Mystery" and "The Nothing Maker" mastering the latter. After all these years, a new line-up only pays Chrissie Hynde apt service with skillfull musicianship and able back-up vocals.
