I recently bought a Breville Smart Grinder Pro BCG820 in November 2025. This was to replace the same grinder I had bought in September 2015, which lasted almost 10 years. This type of grinder was necessary to produce a fine grind, required for espressos made in our Breville Dual Boiler machine (BES900/B). After 10 years, we found that the original grinder was no longer producing a consistent, fine grind as it had previously. We followed all the normal trouble-shooting advice, including doing a thorough cleaning of the conical burrs. It was not until removing the lower burr and examining it carefully that we realised that the "teeth" had actually worn smooth with 10 years of use (3 times a day). This meant that there was actually a perfect "seal" such that any ground coffee could not actually exit the grinder. We are happy with our replacement purchase and look forward to another 10 years of use. With hindsight, we could have probably tried harder to secure a replacement lower burr set for the original grinder and just replaced the worn-out lower burr set. Incidentally, we use this grinder with the Breville Dual Boiler machine which we bought in 2013. We had the Dual Boiler machine serviced in 2019 by a company recommended by Breville (in St Peters, Sydney). It is worthwhile getting such a service, which, even though relatively expensive, is cheaper than buying a new machine (and less wasteful). At the time we bought the Breville Dual Boiler machine (in 2013), Breville was offering a complimentary barista course with Toby's Estate. This was incredibly worthwhile, to get the most out of the machine, since Toby's Estate was running barista courses with a room full of Breville machines at the time.
Great entry grinder if you're diving into the world of espresso. It's been a great tool for me to discover the differences that grind settings and dosings make in espresso extraction. Without having to spend an arm and a leg the grinder gives you access to the world of making the adjustments you need. The portafilter attachment with the push to turn on and grind is my favourite setting. Once you're dialed in, grinding becomes a fluid part of the espresso brew. Check out James Hoffmans Understanding Espresso videos on YouTube if you're keen to dive in.
This is our replacement for the previous gen grinder BCG800 that came with plasticky impeller under the conical burrs. It was still great and functional after so many years of daily use! Smart Grinder Pro looks very similar to its predecessor, but it has a lot of more improvements and functions and it definitely lives up to its name. It allows you to be more accurate with grinding and have ability to remember different settings for different beans. This model also uses grinding time rather than using dials in the prev-gen. Once you set it up, you will need some good freshly roasted beans and your fingers (and portafilter ofcourse), you will definitely see the improvement of the coffee extraction. Highly recommend it. PS: This one comes with stainless steel (I think) impeller so it would be less likely to be worn out.
We completely love our new Smart Grinder Pro. During COVID lockdown we have been even more reliant on making coffee at home and since buying the new grinder our coffee is as good as cafe quality.
This burr grinder is strong and produces great coffee grounds. At first I was a bit intimidated by so many options, but now I can finesse the grind to the flavor of coffee I want.
Simple interface which is really easy to use. Once you've dialled in to your preferred settings, it's set and forget, just push the portafilter and basket into the holder, and it will start automatically when you nudge it into place. Makes great coffee having it this fresh.
good grinder. Does what it is supposed to. Ups the game.
Grinder is excellent. Would be even better if spare parts were available.
This has been a great machine for the past few years but I have a suggestion. Every day my wife has one shot and I have two and to swap between the two is 8 button presses away. I suggested replacing the button with a dial.
I purchased the Smart Grinder Pro April 2023 along with a Dual Boiler. I use the Smart Grinder Pro as a single dose machine and generally use around 80gms of coffee beans per day (4x20gms). I weigh the bean dose and weigh the output, then weigh the shot. When the grinder is near to the end of grinding the dose, I give it a gentle rock to help eliminate retention. However I have found of late that the grind has become quite inconsistent, from one dose to the other, and also the adjustability is also not really fine enough. If you are coffee aficianado, I would suggest you spend a little more on a more specialised product to avoid disappointment and frustration.
