I was needing to replace a serger that I never really liked because it was frustrating to thread, very temperamental to sew with and thread would break if you just looked at it wrong. I wasn't sure about this model and how it differed from the 1034D. I did a search and. Someone had posted the difference between that model and the 1034DX. Odd that Brother doesn't make it easier to research, anyway after reading that there were many improvements on this model (I can't remember the reviewer's name, I'd like to give her credit) I decided to give it a try. So glad I did! I opened the box and found it already threaded. A test piece of fabric showed that it was working properly. I placed the unit on my work surface and tried it on my own. It ran perfectly! I then grabbed another piece of fabric and tried it, still worked! But then one of the threads broke. Oh crap! My old serger would sometimes take an hour to rethread, I hated it because it was so tedious. So I was not looking forward to this at all. So, I began the process expecting the worst, I followed the guidelines shown on machine. Wow! Simple and very clear, threading the lower looper (which is usually the most frustrating part) took me all of two minutes! I had the serger back up and running in less than 10 minutes! It worked the first time I rethread the machine without issue. I started serging and trying out different things, all with beautiful results. I actually ran out of thread that was supplied with the machine. I then replaced with my own thread, once again it took about ten minutes. Fearing the worst, it worked perfectly again! No issues! I thought that the “opera” brand was supposed to be the better one, boy was I wrong. I enthusiastically recommend this machine to anyone who wants a quality result that is super easy to setup and use. The price can't be beat and there is a reason why Brother only has a few models compared to the other brands, it's because they have perfected it and no improvements are needed, they have already made the best and easiest to use machine! A plus, two thumbs up, simply the best, however you say it, you won't go wrong with this machine.
what a great little serger for a good price! I'm new to serging having held back because of the stories I've heard about how complicated they are to thread and use . this one is super user friendly and color coded for threading. Very happy i purchased
I'm 76 and have been sewing most of those years. I needed (wanted) one to help with knits. I was unsure because everyone talked about how hard threading sergers is.. Fortunately, I found the best tutorial. It had great lighting and her directions were clear and simple. Her YouTube name is Sow and Sew. The Brother 1034DX is a great machine. It is set up in a way that makes sense. I've used it several times, and it did a great job. I have a lot more to learn, but my confidence is high. Next is setting the tension. Sow and sew said her net sewing video would be on tension. When it first came, I told my son to keep the box because I might take it back. Now, he has another box to demolish. shes
This was an upgrade of a previous Brother serger that I owned. I was familiar with the product so I knew what to expect. The machine did not disappoint AND it was on sale!
This serger is awesome for the price. The versatility of what you can do with it is awesome. I only wish that it came with more accessories so I wouldn't have to buy them separately. No worries though there is a lot that it does anyway. The stitches are consistent and beautiful. I have already made 2 garments using polyester and cotton materials. There were no adjustments necessary when going between the two types of materials. Definitely worth the money.
i have a pfaff and i can do an overlock stitch, but this serger made everything so much faster. I sew mostly with cotton fabrics and this is just a must have. it comes with 4 spools of thread already threaded. just take it out of the box and plug it in, but I highly recommend reading the manual if you haven't used a serger before.
This machine was easy to set up with the color coded thread guides. I bought thread cones- and did not use the provided ones. I did need to use a flashlight for the inside threading-that was a bit tricky to hold flashlight and thread- was the only hiccup. Once setup-I haven't had to make any adjustments.
For an inexpensive Serger, this one does the basics well. I am pleased withe speed and the stitch quality so far. Differential feed is great for knits and thinner wovens. The drop-in threading is easier than the old dial type. The main drawback is the horrible design to change the needles. Instead of using a small flat-head screwdriver as my other serger and all my sewing machines have used, it uses a tiny black hexagon screwdriver. What's worse is that the place to screw it in is also black--very hard to see without a flashlight. Very awkward to change needles--makes me dread it.
The machine has started giving me a lot of problems. It only worked well for the first 2 months. After that, the blade that makes the thread stitches keeps coming out, and the needle keeps breaking. I'm very stressed out. I feel like my money has been wasted. I can't even return it. Please tell me what to do.
I have only used for 2 month. It made beautiful stitches in the beginning, but now the chair is awful and the machine keeps running even though I am not even pressing in the foot. Luckily, I am still within the return window, and I am going to return it and get another, one, but I am out the extended warranty I purchased.
