Great sewing machine

BadSister February 16, 2014

The sewing machine is what it was advertised to be. It works excellent. I have tried all the different stitches as of now, but haven't as of yet tried a lot of the other features, but am sure they will work just fine. I recommend this machine to anyone.

Works great

Mart August 11, 2016

This sewing machine is great. It has different variations of stitches to use for multiple purposes. The fabric glides smoothly across for good even stitching. It is very easy to thread by just looking at the instructions. I haven't touched a sewing machine in years and I am by no means an expert sewer, but my projects so far have been decent using this machine. I really like that the plate on the bottom is see through to tell when I'm almost out of bobbin thread. It also has a little space for storage to have on hand. I also like how easily I access the thread cutter on the left side of the sewing machine (slide the threads to cut and keep on moving to the next stitch). It doesn't weight much so I can move it easily wherever I want to work. I haven't yet used all the features but the ones that I have, I can say have made me very satisfied.

Great for the price and MY SKILL LEVEL!

LULUinBC September 19, 2016

My last sewing machine was purchased 40 years ago-- and even with all the bells and whistles I don't believe I ever made a button hole or used the embroidery-type stitches. When it finally went kaput I decided a new machine was necessary, but only one that was truly for beginner to intermediate type seamstresses. This Brother JX2517 was ideal! All the prior feedback assured me it was worth a try. I used it feverishly for a few days completing a sewing project I had started on my first machine, and was delighted to find it was easy to learn, fast, and, when I did encounter a tension issues- easy to troubleshoot (I had the bobbin threaded incorrectly). I'm super happy! May even try to make my own Halloween costume now!

Not bad for the price!

Yvette April 14, 2020

Purchased this to learn to sew masks for this crazy time we are living in right now. The last time I used a sewing machine was about 30 years ago, so I consider myself a beginner. It was very easy to follow/set up and seems to be working well and I have been running it for a few days now. The few issues I have had were user errors.

A pretty understanding machine.

RenamonDancer May 13, 2014

I am starting to work with plushes, sewing stuffed animals and costumes via commission work. After my first machine broke, I had taken the time to do hand sewing for these products, and it just didn't cut it. I needed another machine. Though maybe it was dumb of me to go for a cheaper machine, this sewing machine has really helped me out with my products so far! The only thing that happens is that the thread ends up getting loose and tangled, BUT that's definitely because sometimes I accidentally thread over the tension dial instead of properly threading under it. (I can be forgetful, oops.) To me, if you take your time with this machine when working with it, it gets you places in your projects well. It really does what the provided instructions and tutorials say it does. This is a good machine for everyone with their hobbies and if you need something for awhile reasonably priced for what you do with it, try it out!!

User Friendly, Great First machine

Kalibelle October 26, 2014

I'm sure there are sewing machines that do much more than this one. However, as far as affordable and useful products this wins. It's very user friendly, comes with a DVD with instructions and all. I love it and haven't had any trouble yet. Very happy I bought it.

So far so good

Seamgirl August 16, 2014

We purchased this sewing machine for small quick projects. We had it for a week so far and it has been great. It was definetely a smart buy. My daughter and I have been enjoying the projects weve been able to make. Neither one of us are seamstresses which makes this machine a must. It is practicly do it yourself. I would recommend to anyone. Also the how to DVD is a huge plus.

Good product. Meet my expectations

QueenEllis2 November 30, 2013

I am happy with the purchase overall. I used it to extend sleeves of my shirt on the second day. It worked well. Multiple stitches allow you to choose for differen purposes. A couple of issues (actually not issues but need to be careful and spend more time) I would like to mention: 1) The instruction is not obvious or as easy as I thought. It took me a little longer to understand. They should do a better job on instruction manual or quick reference guide 2) You'd better try on scrap for a particular stitch type. Otherwise, it will be very difficult for you to undo it. You can not rely on the picture of stitch on machine for the effect on your clothes.

Seems to do the job

TrulyNoviceSewer May 14, 2014

I haven't had to thread the bobbin yet so can't tell how that will do. The top threading is easy enough. I am NOT normally a sewing person. There seems to be a problem with the reverse button - as it doesn't work at all. I shall have to call Brother to determine the cause. I also found I cannot use my old bobbins because they are metal & this machine only uses a certain plastic type. I do appreciate the extra machine needles. I wish it had a handle. It would be easier to lift. For the money, it's fine. Do like the flowers decorating the machine. Very "girly."

Upgrade if you can afford it

TulumChica December 18, 2013

I have been sewing for many years - apparel and home decor. I purchased the Brother CS6000i a few years ago to have a lightweight, not too expensive machine at my home in Mexico. I have been very pleased with the features and performance of the CS6000i. After a sudden, unplanned return to the US for my husband's medical care, I purchased the Brother JX2517 to use while I am here, thinking it would be of the same overall quality as the CS6000i, but with fewer features. So far it has performed satisfactorily in the small projects I have done, but the overall feel of the machine is cheap, almost toy-like. You can't adjust the stitch length and width. The most used stitch lengths with alternate needle positions are part of the "17 stitches." I really miss the automatic needle threader. Even if you are a beginning sewer, do yourself a favor and upgrade to the CS600i if you can.
