This machine is simple and easy to use.

blalockm December 4, 2016

I am fairly new to machine sewing, and after trying a couple of different machines I have found that this machine definitely is the simplest to use while allowing me to do many different things. The bobbin snaps easily into a compartment below the foot and getting it ready to go is very simple. You pull your thread along a groove that then cuts it off for you. You did your threaded needle into the base and pull out to find your bobbin thread. It's one of the simplest set ups I've tried.

Great value & quality

jdehdrc February 1, 2014

I purchased this machine as a brand new sewer/quilter. I chose it because it had great reviews, and because it came with so many additional things, like the walking foot, 1/4" foot, etc. Now that I have used it for several weeks, I'm still loving it and pleased with the purchase. I did have to call Brother for a question about one of the feet, and unfortunately waited for about 20 minutes before a customer service rep answered my call, but as for the machine itself, it's great!

A GREAT machine!

Newmomabroad December 14, 2016

I am posting this review as part of my entry in Walmart's Holiday Sewing Contest. I was FINALLY able to get a sewing machine this year and I am very pleased with my Brother 130-Stitch Sewing and Quilting Machine, SQ9185 thus far. I have several projects waiting for a machine, but since it was a long, long time ago when I last sewed on a machine, I started with a basic and made matching sci-fi themed bandannas for my family—great for camping! They were easy to sew a hem upon, so I took the next step and tried my hand at a reversible bib for a friend’s niece. I used the monogramming function to add the baby’s name to the bib’s tie. It worked well, but I will need to get a pair of sharper thread cutters to make the letters look crisp by closely trimming the extra thread between the letters. Pictured is this reversible bib, although after the picture was taken I did add a stitch about ¼ inch along the edge to tidy the bib up a tad. Since this bib, I have made some quilted bibs. After watching a video on how to attach the walking foot, it was fairly easy to attach this foot and sew along the quilted bib as needed. I have also made a blanket, 2 pillows, and a skirt. (Remember, I mentioned I had a lot of projects lined up!) The wide table was not only quick to attach, but very steady as well. It really helped when sewing the blanket. Pros: Easy to use. Easy to follow instructional DVD. Easy for a beginner but has plenty of functions and options for a beginner to move to master. Clear bobbin cover makes keeping an eye on the bottom thread a breeze. Quick needle threading with the needle threader. Walking foot makes very smooth stitches. The monogram function is easy to program and the letters come out nicely. The wide table is very sturdy. Cons: Fabric tends to pull to one side a bit, but I am still new to sewing machines. This very well may be operator error. All-in-all, so far, I would say this is a great sewing machine for the beginners and the experienced alike!

Great sewing machine for the casual quiter

patchworkprincess February 12, 2014

Started using my machine to make a couch quilt for my husband's valentines present. Was worried I would not be able to finish it in time because my machine was in need of repair. When the repair was close to the purchase price of the new Brother 130 sew and quilt machine, I decided to get the new machine and use the other as a back up after repair. Well, the new machine is a dream come true. Makes quilting even easier than my old machine and my husband will get his valentines present on time.

great machine

You get a lot of machine for the money! I was most interested in the quilting attachments - they have met all my expectations. The machine itself is quiet, smooth and has very good lighting. Brother has always put out a good product, this is no exception!

Brother 130-stitch sewing machine is wonderful

OmaRose June 20, 2014

It has been years since I did any sewing. About A month ago I joined a quilting class and needed a new machine. After surfing the web, talking to the instructors and sewing on another students Brother I knew the Brother would be the right machine. Walmart website offered it at a great price free shipping to my local Walmart and could pick it up the very next day. This sewing machine is everything and more then I expected. Threading both top and bobbin is very easy with built in needle threaded, changing the presser feet is snap on & off, because it is a sewing and quilting machine there are presser feet just for quilts. This is a plus for a learning quilter as well as the experience one. I took it out of the box watched the DVD that comes with the machine thread it and I was sewing. Started by trying some of the 130 stitches and button hole maker. Again I can't stress the ease this machine is to use. I replaced a hem in one of my granddaughters dresses using the blind stitch. I've done blind stitching but this machine made the hem look if it had been done on professional/commercial machine. To change from one stitch to another, push a button or two and you can do any of the 130 stitches. I would recommend this machine for the beginner or the skilled sewer.

So easy to use!

birdhouse79 May 18, 2014

Took it out of the box, set it up and was sewing on it in less than 15 mins! My favorite feature, thus far, is the button to push to make the needle go down! All I have to do is keep my hands on the material...no holding the tails of the threads, trying to keep the material in place while rotating the knob a few stitches so the thread doesn't catch and tangle! I would recommend this machine to experienced quilters, such as myself to beginners.

Great sewing machine for quilting.

nanajaj October 29, 2014

I ordered this sewing machine on line and picked it up in the store the same day. It arrived a day earlier than estimated and I was thrilled because I was able to take it with me to my quilting class that night. It has many great features with stitches and accessories. I love that it has a quilting foot and a walking foot. I also love the up/down needle feature and the automatic sewing feature where you don't have to use the foot pedal. I love the machine what can I say. :)

Harp is to small

Kicksquilts August 30, 2014

I am a serious quilter. I purchased this machine for that purpose. However, the harp on this machine is very small. Making it very difficult to fit a large quilt in it. I have ruined a beautiful quilt with this machine. I can see using this machine for small projects but not for quilting.

Didn't meet our needs

Texasbelle797 July 25, 2014

Got the machine for elderly mother. She couldn't see to thread needle and needle threader was awful. Light shining on foot and needle was pretty bad. (glare) Machine was very noisy and tended to knot up in the bobbin. I ended up returning it. I'm at a loss of what to try next. The Singer we had was initially great but only lasted couple of weeks before it broke. Now this. Guess I'll get her 20+ year old Pfaff repaired. Thank goodness Wal-Mart is so good about returns.
