I really like this! We've had an especially hard winter with weeks of -0 temps. My chickens are in a walk-in coop, insulated, and I wanted to know the temp fluctuations with certainty. I bought a regular round thermometer and placed it in the coop where I could read it from the camera. However, any time the chickens bumped it when on their roots, it would fall. And reading the dial was impossible at times because of the lighting.
This is absolutely perfect! I can place it wherever I want to monitor temps, not just high up but closer to the ground where the birds spend most of their time. I now know what they're feeling temp-wise.
Setting it up is a bit like setting up an alarm clock from the 80s. It was not a problem and the directions are very well written. One problem i did have was when the coop temp dropped to 32f. An alarm went off, and I got up from bed to fumble with it. I think pressing the alarm button in the back shut it off, though that part of the display continued to blink until temps went back above 32. The directions say to press the alert button to set the thresholds, but I am unable to locate an alert button, only the alarm button--which sets an alarm like an alarm clock, as I understand it. It appears you can set two different alarms or both at the same time. I still have a few things to figure out!
The package arrived VERY well protected, all bubble-wrapped. The display is beautiful and can be adjusted for brightness. The plug has an adapter for US use. It appears to have been made for Germany. It has batteries for both parts, and the plug for the receiver. You will want to put the AAA batteries (2 each) in the base receiver before programming. If you decide to move it, like i did, you will have to reprogram it if there aren't batteries there to back up the power interruption.
Overall, this is perfect for my needs. Not only does it tell me how my birds are doing in real time, it also tells me what adjustments will be needed this spring to prepare for next winter. The humidity reading is especially helpful, as well as learning the fluctuations in the summer. Also, it does a good job detecting temp and humidity inside the house too.
I have received this item in exchange for my review.
