Celestron PowerSeeker 80 EQ Telescope

Very good achromat doublet refractor with an adequate German equatorial mount (GEM) but low cost/low quality accessories. The rack-and-pinion focuser is smooth and remained so in the 2 years I've used mine. The included eyepieces are low quality but long focal length refractors are forgiving. Good quality Plossl eyepieces improve the views tremendously so plan to buy some over time. The 3x Barlow is inferior, The 4x24 finderscope uses plastic ovals as springs in the front of its mount. Those may slip together or fall out making it impossible to align the finder with the telescope. Cut strips or ovals of semi-stiff plastic and slip them into the front of the finder holder to stabilize it. The instruction book is good but search the Internet for more on polar alignment. The tripod is very light, barely adequate to support the telescope. Add weight to stabilize it (I use milk jugs filled with water). An 80mm scope gathers significantly more light than 70mm or smaller scopes (light gathering area is pi times the radius squared; do your own math). The telescope shines when viewing planets. The moon is so bright that a lunar filter helps. I have been able to see most of the brighter Messier objects through this telescope (and I'm still looking). I routinely take this scope to public star parties. It's often the smallest scope on the field but it provides some great views for the public. For the money spent, this telescope package is a great value.

I was shock to see it. I was surprise to see how great it looked. It's a Xmas gift for my son. He'll be surprised as well. I'm never disappointed with anything I purchase from Walmart. Thank you.

Price is right for a beginner wanting to check out the moon and planets, takes a little time putting it together if its your first EQ telescope, the small finder scope is not hard to align but if you bump it you have to realign, the eyepieces are good for the money I'm thinking down the road of getting a couple little more expensive eyepieces because all I have read on the subject is the better eyepieces makes your telescope seem like a new telescope. For a beginner I don't think you can go wrong with the Celestron-PowerSeeker-80-EQ-Telescope.

Assembly and setup were pretty easy, however getting it calibrated and adjusted properly were difficult. A basic knowledge of telescopes is essential to operating it. Take some time during the day to setup the finders piece and you should be good to go for some nighttime observations. Overall it is a quality piece and I would recommend it for the beginner or novice user.

Not bad, but not much better than an old 60x60 spotting scope I have. I personally wouldn't buy one again.

We've never owned a telescope before so we don't have much info to compare this telescope with others. Bought it for our 10 year old son, so it seemed like a good place to start. We'll probably upgrade in the future...but for now this is good for him to "learn" on.

This scope is as the telescope magazine reviewers said. The scope itself is very good, the mount is very good, and the tripod is stable. But, everything else is rubbish. I got what I expected, because I had researched beforehand. For example, the finderscope is so atrocious that I could not even train the scope on Orion's dagger, even with the low-power eyepiece. I will replace the finderscope with a Telrad, replace the diagonal with something not made by Fischer-Price, and replace the eyepieces with lower magnification.
