These radios let my sister and i communicate between our houses about a mile apart, for 3 days until cell phone service was restored after Hurricane Ian. I would buy them again, BUT only if they provided at least 5W recharging (10 times faster than this model charges).
They have many exceptional features (list below) that made these well worth the cost of nearly $130 for the 3-pack, but sadly the exceedingly slow recharge rate (plus an issue with one of the 3 radios) was a dealbreaker for me. I'm a charging geek, with many rechargeable fans, lights and powerbanks that helped me survive SW Florida during and after Hurricane Ian. I care about large battery capacity in my fans/lights/etc, which usually support fast (usu 10W) charging, since otherwise large batteries would take all day to recharge.
THESE RADIOS TAKE ALL DAY TO RECHARGE (15 hrs to recharge, per the user guide, with a max charging speed of 0.5W per my measurements). The instructions tell you to avoid charging radios while they are powered on, which means there's no way to have a radio monitoring 24 hours a day (as my sister and I did during the hurricane) without keeping it plugged in, which apparently is discouraged, and in some cases may not be easy or possible.
A savvy user might consider removing the batteries to recharge them in a dedicated fast recharger, but it's a pain, made worse by a very difficult battery case cover that requires a screwdriver and damaging prying to remove.
One of the three radios went from 3 (of 4) bars of remaining power, right down to 0, without passing 2 bars or 1 bar -- essentially disabling one of the radios with no warning. That's what makes the 3-pack a nice feature when you only really need 2, because it gives you a backup radio in case one of them loses charge or fails.
Many Pros (with minor Cons):
- Pro: Direct charging port (Micro-USB) means you can charge without the bulky cradle that comes with every other set of radios. Two people in different households cannot share a single charging cradle, so the ability to charge directly from a micro USB cable was a minimum requirement for our usage. Nonetheless, one can presumably purchase a cradle for use with these radios, as a cradle can be convenient to keep charge topped off.
Con: a higher-end pricey radio like this should have a modern type C charging port for better durability, cable availability, fast safe charging, and ease of use in challenging conditions.
Con: Keeping the radios plugged in while on standby for hours at a time SHOULD be a supported configuration, ESP given the 15-18 hour time for a full recharge.
- Pro: Waterproof and floatable is exceptional. In humid Florida, electronics and battery compartments tend to go bad quickly even when they're not left in the rain, so waterproof items like this are my go-to for Florida. Waterproof is ideal, And we're paying for, if you're in any emergency weather situation where they might be exposed.
