I have been using U Guard for several years on my quarter horse. He was diagnosed with ulcer, and has been on it for awhile. Never had a problem, he does well on this product.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Have been using this product as a daily for a number of years and have had great results. Highly recommended.
U-gard pellets keep my girls stomach healthy and happy. The pellets are affordable and super easy to use and don't make a mess like liquids and powders do.
After we found out my horse has 4 (yes 4!) gastric ulcers we did the 30 day Omeprazole treatment but after he finished that we needed to decide on a daily option or the gastroguard for stressful situations. After searching through smartpak I decided on a daily option so I read reviews and reviewed ingredients and decided on u-gard pellets. So far I have been very pleased with the results and he has never been better. I would reccomend U-Gard to anyone. And of course get it in smartpaks and autoship!
I've had my 21 yr old TB gelding on this for 3 months (high dose first two months, lowered to maintenance dose in month 3) in an effort to buffer against a change in diet from the swanky performance feed which he decided was yucky to the senior feed (apparently he wants to be old) offered by our wonderful barn. It's tricky to isolate how much of the changes I noticed were strictly due to the addition of this supplement but here are our results regardless: Day 1 - 3: Well he's eating it so there's that. No change. Day 4 - 14: Are you less grumpy or is it my imagination? Week 3: Definitely less grumpy and eating better. Not so weird about the girth this week. Week 4 - 8: Much improved, seems happier and more willing. Month 3: Dropped to maintenance dose and still seeing positive effects. Hasn't tried to kill me this month so I'll call it a win.
I have a young appendix mare that just seemed off, under weight, chewing on stalls constantly, and anxious under saddle. I've used this product before with good results so I decided to try it on her. She's been on it for approx. 5 weeks now and has gained weight, quit chewing, and is a new horse under saddle.
I bought this a month ago for an older mare who kept dropping weight after being separated from her pasture buddy of 3 years. She was on many different supplements during the winter (Forco, msm, cherry oil, Cool Calories, and alfalfa pellets, senior grain, Tribute right choice) and high quality hay and nothing seemed to be helping much. In a month after starting her on this she has gained a lot of weight, her back linne doesn't stick out, her hip bones are no longer able to be seen and her coat is very healthy and shines. She acts like a whole new horse! Works great for a reasonable price, never had a problem with her eating it.
I've had my arabian gelding on this about three months and he's not as girthy anymore when I saddle up and he stands still better when I groom him and is not as hot when we ride the trails. We only do light rides as he has heaves. I'm adding a hindgut supplement and see how he does on that.
I use this product on my Oldenburg gelding that is ulcer prone. I find it to be of great use during show season or stressful times for preventative measures and is MUCH cheaper then a preventative dose of Gastrogard. I have been urged not to use it long term as treatment or prevention as it uses an Aluminum compound which acts as an acid buffer (good) but is not absorbed well and can cause toxicity and calcium loss when used long term. I use Tractgard as an everyday preventative and electrolyte and reach for the U gard only when I feel it's necessary. In my opinion, as with most ulcer products, that it is a bit overpriced but it is easy to administer and palatable for even my picky eater.
I put one of my babies into training and between the moving and the stress of having to do something other than graze in a field, he developed ulcers. I did a 30 day treatment of Omeprazole from racehorsemeds.com (much cheaper btw) but didn't want a relapse so I put him on this. He is doing well with no indication of ulcers returning. I can touch his girth area and behind his withers and put a saddle on him no problem - these were things I just could not do before treatment. I plan to keep ordering this product. Very cheap alternative to dealing with a cranky horse that is in pain.
