I got this for my two youngest grandchildren they are six and nine. They had never heard of a geode before, and we read through the information that was given with the geode. It is quite informative and fairly simple language. It tells where the geodes were from which was Morocco, and how old they are. It also explains how videos were formed and the different types of geodes. We then got the hammer and the sock as was suggested and had them crack a fill them open on the sidewalk. We were able to get one half piece but the rest were partial pieces. Some were quite full of crystals and others were more hollow. They had a lot of fun doing this part. I would suggest that you not expect to get the sock back if that is what you use, we used a fairly thin sock and it was full of holes by the time we were done lol. We didn’t have a rock hammer but we used a small hammer to crack these and it worked fine. There were about 25 in the box and they said they were medium sized I’ve taken a picture where I laid a pen in the box with the remaining geodes my older grand daughter wanted to save some of them and take them to school and have them crack open for show and tell. I think this was a great teaching opportunity for the kids and they had fun doing it. I would definitely suggest if your child has any interest in things like this to get this set there quite a few other sets and see how much fun they had with this. We will definitely be looking into getting more of this type of kit.
These are so much fun. They did arrive in a plain brown box and its was kind of dirty and sandy. But once we got out the little rocks and our hammer we couldn't stop. Some were easier than others to break open. We ruined our had towel in the process. But you can also use a rock saw if you have one. Breaking them with a hammer made it more difficult to salvage the rocks but it was so much fun. I gave my kids 3 each and they kept begging me to keep going. They had so much fun with this. After we were done we went inside and looked up a YouTube video on geodes. very fun and educational.
Was perfect gift for 6yr old! The joy of cracking the geode was topped by the crystals inside. Was excellent gift.
There was a lot to this item, Made you feel like you got your money worth...my son loved it,and so did his cousins who watched him open his gift..
Cheaper than Amazon! Great value for the kiddos. Used for a birthday party and it was a hit. Thank you!
I only gave this 4 stars because I’m having a really hard time busting them open due to having a rubber mallet, not hammer. I’ve tried other hard objects to smash them open and no luck. I like the different sizes of geodes. I also like the information provided in the box. Once I get my hammer I can’t wait to see the gorgeous quartz inside.
These are so much fun! My kids LOVED this little adventure of breaking the rocks open and seeing the beautiful crystal inside. I did take away one star because some of the rocks are down right impossible to break open. This will keep your kids entertained for more than five minutes though
A little smaller than thought they would be. But the grandson loved opening them . And they glow under the black light!
I purchase these for my ggrandson...he already had a small rock collection. I thought it would be fun to get him some geodes. I did share some with my other ggrandkids. My ggrandson and I had fun cracking them open. We put them in a sock and gave about two whacks with the side of a hammer so that we didn't smash them to pieces. I just wish that there were different ones from different regions in the box so that when they're cracked open it would be a different color instead of just the white insides. We saved some to crack open another day. I'll be ordering more, but hopefully from a different regions so we can get some colored one.
My daughter was so excited for these and what a cool idea for home school or just any kids that love geology, etc. we cracked open about half looking for any purple geodes but only got clear. Some would also not crack, not sure they were geodes. Definitely no variation in the rock colors. I also understand the seller can't really control that as well.
