I use this ground on gessoed canvas and cradled panels. It is super absorbent and makes under painting with water colors and gouache very easy.
Mixed with Daniel Smith watercolor grounds titanium white it produces a warm, light off white that I apply to cold pressed watercolor paper to smooth it out a little. It also maintains it's absorbency however lifting the paint is much easier and quicker.
Purchased to prep a variety of surfaces- paper, panels, board for some gouache paintings.
I first prime my canvases and panels with three coats of Jerry's Artorama gesso, then after it dries I apply 3 coats of Daniel Smith watercolor grounds. Now the surface will accept watercolor, gouache and acrylics. After I will overpaint with oils.
Great product to turn surfaces into watercolor paper. Currently am using watercolor ground on small canvases so that I can watercolor on them. I use 2-3 coats on the canvas and it's perfect for painting. Be sure to have a day between for drying.
Great product always keep on hand
Smooth product. Easy to seal my watercolor paintings with
When I think I have totally messed up a painting, I can put it aside for a few days, assess the damage; if the damage is in a localized area, I can cover over the mess with this product, then paint over it and the probelm is totally obscured! One less paining for the trash
This product is great for a watercolor base on 3D objects. However, it does not act exactly like watercolor paper, so just be aware. Sometimes spots with too much water spill over, outside their boundaries, on this base. Also, after you have painted a section and let it dry, when you paint over part of it, the new paint doesn't stay in its boundaries. Frustrating. But these are things that can be worked around.
I like to use this with watercolors that have a pure black background, painting with the ground instead of black paint.
