I use these for biking and hiking all summer and winter. You may want something thicker for ice fishing. But honestly these is the perfect height and weight for any active outdoor activity. micro crew can be pushed down for more warmer conditions, but tall enough to cover the gap with tights, pants and short gators. With the lifetime warranty, I wear them around the house without shoes, because I don't need to baby them.
I bought my first pair of Darn Tough over the summer to use on exercise walks, and they are probably the best socks I've ever owned. The cushioning is superb on my old man feet, without being too thick. They wick moisture beautifully, they wash well, and, while it's too early to tell how they will last, I see none of the fuzz from other premium socks I've owned. Plus they come in snazzing colors. They are warm but never leave my feet hot and sweaty.
These really are as good as they say they are. I just got back from thru-hiking the AT SOBO with just two pairs of these for 2190.9 miles, and they held up great. No holes, and they have retained their elasticity very well. And of course if and when they do get holes I can send them to DT and get new ones for free. I hiked in these in temps in the low 90s and my feet stayed dry, I hiked in them with temps in single digits and they kept my feet warm. Full recommendation!
Love my Darn Tough socks. I have purchased several pairs over the last year from various vendors and love each pair I get. Backed with a lifetime warranty from Darn Tough and made here in the good ol' U-S-of-A. They are not too thick and not too thin and by golly my girlfriend thinks they make me look socksy, which is nice for everyone. Side note...I'm thinking of becoming a foot model now....Thanks Moosejaw and thanks Darn Tough. Wish me luck!
This is my third pair of Darn Tough socks and I can't say enough good things about them. So comfortable, so well made. I really can't sing enough praise. This is a great weight to wear with jeans on a work day or in hiking boots for a weekend adventure.
I have been wearing the same single pair of socks now for 10 days in a row and somehow they still don't stink! Who wool have thought this sock would be the best? Well that would be me now! My wife is close to asking for a divorce because of my love affair with these socks, but my sworn devotion to these 2 feet jackets will not be swayed! The fantastic voyage will go on!
I bought a pair several years ago and they are still like new. They hold up better than any socks I have worn and I’ve tried many brands. Make sure to order the correct size as they have more specific size options. If you normally wear a large an XL might fit better. In smartwool I wear a large and an XL in Darntough
I have only had these for a few weeks, but already used them for a couple of day hikes. They are super comfortable and warmer than I expected for their light weight. I know they are crew length, but they still barely get past my ankles. That may be more because of my size than a shortcoming in the socks.
I've heard such good things about Darn Tough socks and wanted to finally try them. I bought a Large and I'm disappointed that the fit across the top of the instep at the ankle was painfully tight. The overall sock fit perfectly but the tight instep was a deal breaker.
I got the XL size (US 12.5-14.5), which should have been perfect for my shoe size (US 13). However, the band that you can just barely see in the photos wrapping around the instep/arch seems to be in the incorrect location on my pairs. They instead wrap diagonally from the top of my instep to the back-bottom of my heel. This creates an extremely uncomfortable and painful pressure at the instep. You'd have to have very, very. very flat feet for these to fit without hurting.
