I have a group of guys that Reno old homes we all ways get homes that need loving and their back yards and front yards are out of control. As a owner I have to trust my people to be safe and fast at getting the job done and all my employees love use ing my 20 in and 16 in Dewalt saws
I went through two other Dewalt Chainsaws (12" and 18") before purchasing this one. Those two were not good for homesteading. The 20" Chainsaw however, works incredibly well and is attached to my tractor most days. HOWEVER, I did have to repair and upgrade some internal parts because the original parts wore and broke too easily. Mainly the chain tensioner assembly. The gears were made of plastic and wore/broke after just a month of continued use. After replacing them with the upgrade, I have not had any issues. The other concern of mine was the chain itself. There needs to be a "rip chain" style that cuts through wood and lasts longer. I don't want a "clean" cut with a chainsaw. I want to sharpen it as little as possible and get a long life.
This is my third Dewalt Chainsaw, and I maintain them regularly. This is overall a great chainsaw except for the completely avoidable choice to use plastic housings for things like the bar tensioner, chain drive cowling, etc. The bar tensioner is already gone as a result of the bevel gear having more than 1mm of play inside it's plastic housing and so the gear ends up shaving off the teeth causing deadspots while trying to tighten the bar. Makes it almost unusable. Worst part is, the parts aren't available for this unit either as it's so new. Disappointing that they went to the trouble of designing a much better chainsaw than the last generation, and then skimped on the most important parts.
The only reason this doesn't get a 1 star review is because I have not even been able to use it yet!! When I got the saw home and picked it up out of the bed of my truck, the cheap flimsy handle pulled out of the case and the saw fell to the ground. It bent the cutter bar and broke the hinge on the case. Now I am waiting who knows how long for a replacement bar. I bought this as "tool only"-assembled- so there wasn't even the 3 1/2 pound weight of a battery included. An absolutely inexcusable failure!!!!! LOUSY DESIGN!!!!! This could easily have been prevented with a couple screws on the inside of the handle. If I ever get a bar(not available anywhere right now)maybe I'll get to use it long enough for the chain adjuster to fail too!!! VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!!!!!!!!
The chain tensioner is not quite up to Dewalts usual craftmanship standards. It constantly slips and/or wont tighten without taking saw apart and repositioning gears. For a saw this big and expensive, they should have made sure the tensioner would hold up better. Also, the price of and amount of flexvolt batteries needed to power this saw is very disappointing.
Bought this saw a few months ago as a "big brother" to my 18" dewalt chainsaw. I finally pull it out of the box to drop some bigger trees, get it all setup, and start cutting After using the saw on and off for an hour the chain tensioner seems to stop working. I remove the bar cover followed by the bar, and it moves back and forth as it should. Put the bar on again and same problem, all I get is a noise that sounds like I'm grinding some plastic gears. This thing would be really nice if not for whatever plastic gears are being used to tighten this chain.
Worked great and I loved it until the chain tension adjustment mechanism broke after only a few cuts. The entire saw is completely unusable now. I own numerous DeWalt tools and this is the first one that's really a dud. Definitely needs a redesign. I'm not giving up on DeWalt just yet, but the shoddiness of the design and construction of such a vital component is discouraging.
Worked great until it didn't. Like many other reviews here the tensioner became a problem. The chain keeps coming off as I use it. I'm not sure what to do now?
Chain tensioner stripped out only after a couple small branches. Both sides of teeth are striped out. Causes cut to go crooked. Not safe to use. I would love to get it running. I had high hope for a camping saw.
The chainsaw is junk. I used it maybe 5 times and thoroughly cleaned and oiled it each time. The bar oil leaks everywhere when stored and the saw will last for maybe 5 minutes before the 60V battery is completely dead. Now it appears as through the battery wont even charge so I don't know if the saw did something to the battery as well.
