I've had this unit just over a month and put it to the test this week in particular. It is powerful and just as effective as any pro model gas string trimmer I've owned while in the landscaping trade. The two big complaints that I've seen in this review section are that for many, it quit in very short order and that it is very unbalanced in weight to use. As to the first complaint, it must be that some units must have had faulty switches or electrical connectors which degrade prematurely. Mine has worked flawlessly for some time now. Secondly the weight balance is crippling if you put the handle above the joint hinge and with the handle bend upwards. The better position is to have the handle bend downwards as I first tried, however as I noticed, a few guys have recommended putting it below the joint hinge with handle bend upwards. Voila it is perfectly balanced with a 5AH battery! For those that complain it is right handed only, not so! As an ambidextrous tool user (which every experienced landscaper should be) I actually find it easier to use left handed as the side button gets pressed automatically by my palm. I do agree that a sling should have been included for long use or at least a slot moulded into the hinge to put one on.
Almost had it 3 years trims great , only thing holding it back is the bump head , wears down too fast or i would have gave it a 5 star and to find a replacement head is almost impossible.
This was the first cordless trimmer and outdoor cordless tool that I have ever purchased and I am glad I did. I've always used gas powered trimmers and was happy with them but after dropping it and cracking the case beyond repair I decided to give a cordless trimmer a try. First of all I feel it's well balanced and just long enough for me, I'm 6'1”. It has plenty of power, I actually didn't even realize the first year that it has a high and low speed switch besides the variable speed of the trigger. For the first year I has it set on low and it always was fast enough for trimming along the fence and around trees. The only time that I now use the high setting is when I was trying to clear a path in some very tall and thick overgrown grass and weeds. It's quiet, there's no gas powered engine making noise, yes you hear the wizzing and the string cutting through the weeds but it's much quieter than any gas powered trimmer. The battery life is extremely good, I can get a few weeks of trimming two fenced in yards before I need to charge the battery. The folding feature is something that I didn't think I'd ever use but it's great for storage or to fit in a trunk of a car. I've had this trimmer and the original battery for 4 years and it still works like new. The only annoying issue and the only reason I didn't give it a five star rating is the auto feed of the string. It works but it's so sensitive that any time you barely touch the ground it lets some string out to the point that if you're not careful you are constantly releasing and wasting more string. It took me a long time to get used to it and I still occasionally let sting out when I don't want to. Loading the string however is very easy, just pull the string through the head and rotate the head, it pulls in and winds the string easily. Overall a great outdoor tool besides the auto string feed, I was so impressed with the performance of this cordless tool that I decided to give a Dewalt leaf blower a try.
I bought it second hand from a coworker. I replaced the string cap and have been using it all season. I love this machine. It's strong, the thin string cuts incredibly well through thick grass and tough weeds on low. I rarely need the high speed. Gets through all the trimmings throughout my 1/3 acre property on a 5ah battery. Only complaint hence the 4 stars is it is not well balanced with a 5ah battery. Maybe a 12ah would help, but it gives your forearm a workout. Solid machine
Received as a Christmas gift last year and it quickly became my favorite trimmer. Until the motor crapped out today. I never ran it on high speed low was plenty power for my use. I was trimming light grass and it just quit and started smoking out the motor vents.
Terrible terrible quality of the spool head. I used it thrice and the spool head shattered. Completely shattered, all I could find was one small piece of plastic and the inner spring. Would have loved to give 0 stars, but not being allowed to do that. DON'T BUY.
We bought this last year as my husband has a strong loyalty to DeWalt, and has bought many many tools from this brand which really were top of the line. He's bought 4-5 kinds of saws, drills, impact drills, sanders, and several other tools from DeWalt which really all performed very well. This trimmer has been our worst buy from DeWalt so far. We bought it to upgrade on a no name trimmer we had, and this tool did not even last 2 uses. We used it the first time with no problems, but the next time we used it, it died a sudden and inexplicable death as there was literally no wear and tear whatsoever. Upon researching online, we realized that this model is defective and yet it is still being sold for some reason. We were in the middle of building a business last year and really didn't have time to deal with this at all. Now we are looking at a giant paperweight whose only use came out of the battery that came with it. This is very disappointing and has shaken our trust in DeWalt. We really thought we could blindly trust the DeWalt brand to deliver the same experience across all tools, but it looks like we were mistaken and will have to research every time we buy something from them. Or maybe we'll go with Milwaukee...
Bought this for my wife last summer and was only used a hand full of times and worked well and then went to use it this year and only worked a couple times and now will not operate
I own many many other Dewalt 20V and 60V tools and they've all been good to great... This thing is awful. The power only has two speeds, on or off at only those two speeds. The string reloading is chintzy, doesn't feed out reliably when bumped, and severs the line that the grommet all the time. The position of the handle should be right where the hinge is, so the ergos are all wrong. Tilting it sideways to do edging isn't comfortable with how the handles and head are laid out.... Basically, this is a tool that was designed poorly and not thoroughly tested before hitting the market. Shame on you Dewalt.
