The Third Doctor Debuts in a Classic Season
Arguably, Doctor Who's seventh season, Jon Pertwee's first, is one of the best seasons of the show. While there are only four stories, those stories have some of the more well-written in the show's history. Sure there are weak spots in each story, but those weaknesses do not overcome the overall gravitas of the story nor the performances of the actors. From Pertwee's Doctor to Nicholas Courtney's Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart to Caroline John's Liz Shaw, superb acting all around. Pertwee probably has one of the best introduction stories in Spearhead from Space, which introduces the Autons to the lexicon of villainy of the show. Doctor Who and the Silurians showcases a great conflict between empathy and aggression. The Ambassadors of Death is a fascinating story of space exploration, government manipulation, and how humans should not be so quick to judgment. The final story, Inferno, involves parallel universes and familiar characters with different personalities. If one were to try a classic Doctor Who season, one would not be disappointed in choosing the first Jon Pertwee set.
