Was hesitant after reading many reviews about this stove not working at altitude, and regulator issues. I installed this stove with a low pressure hose with regulator (~11" W.C.) with a 3/8" female flare fitting, like the ones used with any standard outdoor grill, and have had no issues. Used up to 9000ft elevation. No rattling, feels sturdy. My purchase did not include a cover.
I hope Dometic does not remove this review, as I believe there are many people out there who will truly benefit from this information and be thrilled with their stove. I purchased this cooktop from Amazon and had read all the negative reviews here, on Amazon and on forums about the stove not working at altitude, or in general, for about half the users. We live at 4000 feet and camp anywhere from 4000 to 8000 feet. We wanted to replace our diesel Wallas in our Sprinter because the stove was unreliable and slow to operate. Because of the size of our counter top opening that was already cut for the Wallas, this was the closest sized stove we could find (with many other ones being smaller, and therefore not an option for our existing hole), so we figured we'd take a chance. When we tested the stove, same as all the other unhappy customers, we could see that propane was running up to the regulator on the stove but then not making it through the regulator to the burners. At best, it managed a weak flame. Amazon told us they did not have a stove to replace ours with, and refunded our money. A quick second perusal of the internet showed us that no other stove would fit our counter hole (most are smaller), and also many smaller stoves that have rave reviews don't come with an attached regulator--the consumer is supposed to purchase their own regulator. Obviously, the attached regulator is the issue with this stove. With nothing to lose (and a hole in our counter that fits THIS stove and not most others), we decided to experiment with removing the offending regulator. That was shockingly simple with an adjustable wrench and channel lock--it took 10 seconds. We then reattached the propane hose and purchased our own regulator to attach on the tank side. The stove works beautifully now, and we couldn't be happier with it. I really hope this helps all those unhappy T@b owners and other dometic owners or prospective purchasers--we would have been happy to have this information before we started!
We had the smaller drop-in cooktop in our last camper and loved the glass top, however, I could not cook with more than one pan at a time. I love to cook and was really excited to upgrade to the new cooktop. We are going on 2 years since we received our camper and I haven't had any issues. In fact, I love the cooktop. I was only on the Dometics site because I lost a washer and needed the model number to replace it. I have loved using this product and use it all the time. Last year we used our camper for consecutive 10 months, in elevations over 9,000ft without any issues. I was extremely surprised to see the issue with elevation. The quality and functionality have been awesome, as well as the price point.
I bought this, a little nervous about all the reviews related to it not working at altitude. We regularly camp above 6000' and it works just fine. I was extra careful about checking for leaks, using a two-stage regulator, and installing a pressure gauge to make sure the stove was getting at least 11WC (usually more like 12) My primary complaint is that the stove rattles and the rubber pieces to keep it from not rattling fall off easily.
While this unit operates at my home in Oregon (3500 feet) it has failed at 4,000 feet (Bates State Park). It consistently fails to deliver propane to the burners or light at altitudes that other propane stoves easily operate. Issue is currently under consideration by warranty department. I will note that Dometic sells this unit from an authorized retailer in Flagstaff, Arizona, which is 7,000 feet altitude. I would expect the D21 to operate at that altitude, albeit with reduced heat output. My current unit is a replacement for a D21 cooktop installed in a new RV that neither the dealer or I was ever able to start at any altitude, sea level to 3500 feet. My
This drop-in cook top was falsely advertised on Walmart.com. The dimensions of the cook top are not accurate, but the model numbers are the same. Walmart refuses to issue a refund for the cook top because it's from a "third party vendor." Shame on you, Walmart, for not standing behind products you sell on your site. I have reached out to the third-party vendor, and as of the date of this review, I have still heard nothing back. I will never order anything from Walmart again. Amazon will have all my business from this point on.
It would not work even work at sea level. Burners lit a couple of times then quit. All I can use it for is counterspace.
