I have a new mare who has been out of work for a bit, and until she develops her muscle fully, this pad can make certain the saddle fits well, as well as being able to easily shift where adjustments may be needed as she muscles up, or it can be used to help one saddle fit horses of somewhat different conformation. The padding is not super thick so adjustments can be subtle, but can be doubled where more is needed
This pad is great. But I would like to write about smart paks awesome customer service. We ordered two half pads, but were sent a full equine comfort pad in place of the mattes (more expensive) pad by mistake—even though the bag it was in said mattes and we were billed for the mattes. What's good about this story is smart pak fixed it so fast and every phone call connected to a human being who was knowledgeable and helpful. Love this company!
I have owned this half pad in several different colors for a few years now. They are a great investment for a pretty inexpensive half pad/correction pad compared to other brands. They are easy to wash and come out keeping its shape. Only complaint is, the shims do not last very long and become "crushed" after so long, so definitely have to replace them or it serves no purpose once they're crushed. The replacements do not fit as they are a different brand, but you can cut them accordingly.
My saddle fitter suggested I buy a shimmable half pad and add the shims to the back to help the saddle fit on my QH mare. The shims that this comes with are thin pieces of foam. The fitter removed these and replaced them with thicker yoga mat that she cut to shape. Now the padding is much better, and my horse is more comfortable. I use it on my Perch gelding sometimes, too.
I love this pad! It has really helped with saddle fit . I love that it's washable (and I wash it a lot), and was so much less than the cost of similar pads made by bigger name brands. The only problems is the shims compress quite a bit with regular use. All the shims ended up compressing to a fraction of their original thickness after a couple months of regular use. Replacement shims did the same and I ended up making my own replacements.
This pad is great- but worthwhile for the durable cotton shell only. The "memory foam" inserts are worthless and compress down to nothing even just between your finger and thumb. I love the shell though, and was able to cut to fit my own inserts from a yoga mat! This was the best decision ever, as now there is really solid shock absorption, I still get the correction pad effects, it frees the wither, and the horse I ride shows no dry marks or rubs after our rides. Buy this pad, take the time and initiative, and you will have the perfect correction pad!
Purchased after finding my saddle wasn't fitting correctly. Very lightweight and not bulky. Looked very sharp with my saddle ( in black). Also was adjustable to fit with the different foam inserts. One flaw is that the inserts don't have much to them and flatten out like paper after using. I had to put different shims from another pad to use. Great for a growing horse to adjust to saddle fit or use without shims for additional padding between saddle and horse.
The shims are literal pieces of foam. Not memory foam type foam. But actual foam. They are cut in weird shapes and packed in there. I absolutely love my Fleeceworks and thinline shim-able pads but was looking for something less expensive for my young horse. This pad is great... but Ill be purchasing the thineline shims to insert into it because the ones it comes with are garbage.
The foam shims flattened once I was in the saddle and made the half pad slip. I made shims from a yoga mat and those work much better. My ottb lifts and moves under himself more with this pad vs a sheepskin (he has a well muscled shoulder that doesn't need the extra padding but lacks topline on the back where we end up using multiple shims. Nice quality pad but reccomend using different shims.
I was using my barn managers Mattes Correction pad and loved it but did not like the price tag that it came with. I read the reviews of this pad and it sounded as it may work but was worried that the memory foam shims would compress to much, and they did. I even tried Mattes shims as well as thin line pad shims in the pockets and was not satisfied. I will be returning the pad and have purchased a Mattes pad. For a half pad and a horse that does not need a lot of correction it may work fine, but certainly does not compare to a Mattes pad. I am still going to recommend it, but if you really need correction, get Mattes Pad.
