This bad boy will chuck more wood than a woodchuck could chuck wood! I used it on two fairly substantial trees that were damaged in a storm. This 20” bar sliced through it like a ninja sword. No bog down - No getting stuck. 18-24” diameter tree size and I'd get around 9-14 cuts before I needed to swap batteries. Honestly, that's impressive for a battery powered chainsaw on that size tree, and more than enough ninja power for a residential homeowner. Just like every other EGO Power piece of equipment, it proved to be well made, dependable and full of awesomeness!
It's a real 20 inches saw. With two batteries, you can go all day long. If it is as good and as trouble free as the 16 inches I have had for almost 5 years (still working as new after a few blades and a sproket change), it will be a quite economical purchase. I only hope it put more chain oil on the chain than the 16 inches do.
Seeing as how I've only had this saw for about ten days and used it for about 90 minutes total, it's a bit premature to be giving a review beyond first impressions. The cutting speed is fine and it had no problem cutting 18 inch diameter oak logs, the battery lasts about as long as my 76-year-old body does, and I'm pleased with the machine so far. The button that needs to be pushed in combination with the throttle control to make the saw operate is a bit of a pain. If it has a lock position I haven't found it yet. A strip of duct tape works well to hold it in but I've seen better arrangements on other saws where the two sequential operations are more easily combined. Ask me again in a few months if I still like it.
This saw has all the power I will ever need. It is well balanced and operation is straight forward. Compared to other saws I have owned it is relatively easy to clean after use. And, EGO battery power is such an advance over gasoline for power tools!
If you want cutting speed and power, instant start up and longer battery life, this is the saw for you. On the other hand, if you're 120 lbs and under, you might want to start a weight lifting program before running this saw for any length of time. It is beefy. I knew what I was getting into, so it's not like I was surprised, but it is all of the 14-15 lbs it says it is, with the battery. I wanted a chain length of at least 18”, so this one is great. And it's going to keep me fit, too…
I have not yet used the saw itself, but the registration process was clunky. The iPhone app has never worked properly. It appears the saw's firmware should be updated, but that is impossible with the app. It all speaks of more problems to come later.
I've used the EGO 18” saw for awhile, and wanted the 20”. I was disappointed because there are features of the 18 that I wish they had included in the 20. Removing the cover to change the chain on the 18 is a breeze. The 20 has two bolts that need to be loosened, like a typical gasoline saw. Likewise tightening the chain, one hand and no tools on the 18, need the screwdriver end of the tool on the 20. And I haven't benchmarked it, but it seems like the 20 depletes the battery way faster than the 18. The battery level readout on the saw's screen does not seem to match what's actually left in the battery. Still a great tool, lots of power, I'm brand loyal and not sorry about that. But if I had it to do over and knew all this I probably would not have purchased it.
Great upgrade on my now faulty 16” certainly has cutting power along with weight, easily matches my Stihl Farm Boss 20”. But on big issue I ordered the saw with out battery as I already have 3 other batteries and chargers, however they are only 5 ah and this saw does not give you full power unless you have a 6ah or larger battery, that's when you find that Ego big batteries have become ridiculously expensive, one 6 ah battery cost more than the tool! BTW this saw eats through batteries and leaves them very hot so they will not charge for about an hour
I like most everything about this saw. What has come in very handy is the fact I can rise at 6am and cut up fallen trees without waking my neighbors. No mixing fuel is another plus along with no starting problems. I know there won't be any rotted gas lines at the end of the year. It is heavy and a little light on power.
The only disappointment has been the OEM chain. The kerf pitched to the right so much that I was afraid that the bar was bent. It was not possible to make a straight cut. After replacing the chain with an OREGON, it cuts like a champ. The saw has good power and if the work is metered to avoid overheating, the performance is impressive.
